My son and I are building an AR-15 in .223 from ground up. We've got the complete lower and upper assembled. Our next step is to acquire the scope. The primary application is plinking at 100 yards. I would typically ask for the "best" scope for this particular application, but I'm afraid of the answer I will get given the depleting funds for this project. So, I guess I will ask...

What is the best scope in the:

$100 - $200 range?
$200 - $300 range?
$300 and up range?

My thought is to get something that will be "good enough" for now and will allow me to upgrade later when funds allow. Thank you in advance for the input.

I have a Leupold Mark AR mounted on my precision AR. Great scope and in $450 range. Has a ballistic turret for 55 gr bullets which works very well if the velocity of your rounds is in the 3,100 fps range.

If you don't mind a fixed power scope the SWFA 10x are considered great for the money. If I were on a budget and it was just a plunked I would take a look at Primary Arms.

What power scope are you interested in?

I put the new 3X P223 on a .300 BLK AR and it is very nice. (I have moved it one slot forward since the pic) The mounts and scope were $166 shipped from Optics Planet when using "THR FORUM" to get a discount.

I also have a 1X to 4X M223 Nikon scope I caught on sale at nearly half price. It is very nice, although the reticule is a bit thick to suit me.

I use a Simmons 6.5-20 power scope Midway puts on sale regularly to accuracy test an AR. It's really nice.

I have a Nikon Omega 1.65X5X36 scope I have used on an AR and it is really nice. It has 5" of eye relief and needs and needs to be mounted pretty far forward.

For 100 yards if you dont want to go open sight I would look at the Nikon P-223 3x32 nice little optic good name clear glass has tactical-style turrets. You can pick them up at Walmart for about $150 and rings for another $50 bucks.
Next in price range I would look at the Burris line anything high up you might as well buy leupold
