Looking for the best value in AR-15's. Also, what is the lowest end AR you would still recommend?
What is the usual cost of magazines? (30 round, etc)

What is the best value in .308 battle rifles?

- Can any be had for less than $900?
- I like the inexpensive nature of Saigas, but I don't like the expensive hi-cap mags.
- What is the going rate for AR-10 mags, PTR-91 mags?

Best value in a .308 is the Saiga, regardless of mag prices. Next is an FAL. I prefer FALs, but I'd take a Saiga too. I have one in .223 that I love, but right now it's sitting in pieces, waiting to be modified.

RockyMtnTactical,

Not to steal the thread, but you are the second person I've heard recommend
Stag. I am in the market for a carbine. My only experience is with the gov't issue M-4.

Why Stag?

Thanks

i would recomend dpms as well, they are in my opinion not low end but they are a great value and you can own one for a really decent price.

Best bang for the buck, to be simple and to the point.

You can do better (Colt, Sabre, LMT), but you will spend more.

You can also spend more and get LESS.

Stag makes a better rifle than RRA or Bushmaster, and for less... but they don't have the name recognition at this point.

When compared to RRA, DPMS, or Bushy, Stag just offers more stuff standard (like chrome lining, milspec buffer tubes, MPI bolts, etc...), their CS is second to none, and they have very few problems.

I just wish they made a Dissipator style AR. :(

I am a die-hard Bushmaster fan but I have heard nothing but good stuff about Stag. How much do those guns run? Bushies are going for $750-850 NIB in these parts.

Ah, for the days when I could get a NIB post-ban Bushmaster for $650 ....

The PTR-91 is a good value and I think is still available for under $900. The mags can be easily found for about $3 each or lower and are normally quite reliable. If you want a new build FAL, it is normally the same price or higher than the PTR. However, JLD changed hands recently and I don't know what newer PTR's are going for right now.

My brother picked up a DPMS .308 recently. It is handy, well balanced, and accurate. Down sides may be that it chokes on ammo the PTR and M1A will handle just fine and the mags are around $40 each. The M1A is a very good rifle IMHO, but it is more than $900 and you need to make sure you get true GI mags made in the US (~$25). The cheap mags may be okay for range use, but are not as reliable.

Stag + Saiga

For the AR/M4, my Stag is a winner as far as value and performance.
For the .308, most bang for the buck it's the Saiga. I have the 7.62x39 version and like most Russian weapons it's damn near indestructable and eats anything.
AR 30 rnd. mags can be had for around $10 - $14 for good ones (aluminum w/ green "no-tilt" followers. The Saiga mags are about $30).

Enjoy. Ammo costs wil quickly eat any price difference among decent rifles.

The best value is to roll your own. A lower receiver + Del-Ton rifle kit will cost less than $600.

Stag build lower mid $200
MidwayUsa.com occasionally has dpms upper deals that are beyond awesome, mid $400 for great upper.

=$700 for kick ass combo imo
