"I really appreciate the help guys, especially some of those incredibly original ideas. I might even check out that umbrella, but I am curious to its legality for carry in my state (MD). "

Oh heck Foot45, you didn't say you were in Maryland! If you're not too far from me, I could give you some instruction in stick work as well as some other improvised tools, passing on what I learned in Colorado Law Enforcement Training Acadamy. Our head training officer Sgt. Ralph Smith of the Pueblo PD taught us well how to deal with non firearm issues. If you contact Larry Ashcroft on these forums he can vouch for Sgt, Smith and my bonafides.

I don't charge anything for instruction, I just like to pass on what I know to the younger guys coming along. Plus I have a love of sticks. We had a course in the army on how to improvise weapons in a pow camp, and sticks were on the top of the list. Kick out a chair rung, towel rack, firewood, handle from mop, broom, shovel. Plus you can take a stick anywhere vs a gun or knife.

Give me a shout if you want.

Carl.

Umbrella Legality?

I might even check out that umbrella, but I am curious to its legality for carry in my state (MD).

Pardon?

You mean there are places where it might not be legal to carry an umbrella?

Makin' me squint here.

I keep my old police batons around, including a riot baton, plus a couple of saps, but I would hesitate to use them so I also keep a couple of those bamboo practice swords around. I also keep a couple of putters and 7 iron around the house. But I also have a 12 ga and a .45 1911 nearby.

When I look around my house even I am surprised by the number of real and improvised weapons and readily available (hat/coat rack; cane; golf clubs, knives; firearms; fire extinguisher; standing lamps; hammers; screw drivers; 48"-1.25 dia dowel; knives; guns; WD-40 and lighter; a sock with piece of lead in it; pool cue).

I had an LEO with 22 years of experience that said the ASP is junk and only easer to carry in the patrol car and not much else in addition he also said he would rather beat them (perps) with his radio than the ASP

now thats just a funny opinion i thought id share but me just go to lowes, home depot get a couple dowel rods cut up just as u like em, weight, length, width whatever then tape up for a grip and screw on 6-10 metal hose clamps in alternating fashion for "greater effect"
Cheaper, faster, Better home management 101

Based on this thread, I revisited an old 16" baton. After good results, I picked up a 16" aluminum "Airweight" ASP. This baton is as fast as any stick I have ever used. So far, it has held up without any problem, but I suspect it will not take as much abuse as a steel ASP. I may be wrong.

It definitely appears to be very useful.

If you are worried about freaking out your housemates, what about just keeping a plate with a fork and a big butcher knife (and maybe even some crumbs) on your dresser. Then, they can call you a slob, but not a paranoid weapon nut. And you still have a large sharp object ready to go at a moments notice.
