Which bolt-action .308?

I've been wanting a Remington 700 in .308 for quite some time & even more after I shot one last year, but I have to stop & wonder about what else is out there.

Are there any comparable bolt-action .308s for considerably less money? It will be used on the range & to take care of zombies when the apocalypse takes place.

I would trust a Savage Arms bolt action. The Rem is a great gun though. Check out your local gun shows and don't forget about the used market. (the Remington VTR in .308 is a Fun gun if it's your style.

As far as price, I'm not spending anywhere near $2k. I'm looking for about $500 or less (Used would be fine with me as well)

Of course, I'm not expecting a scope on it at this price. So if there's no scope, I'll find my own.

Remington is always a name that you can trust, and is trusted by many members of this forum. But, there are comparable rifles in the same range, if not cheaper, that can be just as reliable.

Take a look at Savage/Stevens line up, go handle a few at a gun shop or a gun show, figure out what fits you best. The Accutrigger that is factory with the Savages are nice, makes those long range targets feel more comfortable.

I own a Remington 700 in .270 and a Stevens Model 200 in 300 Win Mag. The Stevens has become my favorite hunting rifle due to its lighter weight (stocks are a bit light and cheaply made on the Stevens 200 rifles) and it's a tack driver. My .270 has been adopted by my girlfriend, who can shoot that rifle way better than I can. The Remmy 700 just don't like me I guess, cause I've never been able to shoot decent with it.

Savage is the bottom line in bang for the buck, says I. Actually, Stevens is great too, for the money. I have the Stevens 200 in 308 and it is a nice gun. It is very accurate off of the bipod. The trigger sucks but it doesn't bother me for a $280 rifle. And like bang bang says, it's nice and light. I hear the accutrigger (which is sweet) will drop right in to a stevens though.

I have 2 BA rifles in .308. They are a custom stocked 788 Remington and a Kimber 84M Longmaster classic. Both shoot very well, but I actually like the 788 better.

I had the same problem, I went with the Remington 700 in .308. I thought it was the best value for the money.

I have a Ruger M-77 in 308 that I like.
I bought it many years ago, so I don't know what the current asking price is, though I would think it may be less than the Remington.

For $500, you can most definitely pick up a base rifle Savage or Remington, and have some change for a scope.

I haven't seen any prices lately, but I would estimate that $450 should cover either of the 2 brand new. I know my Stevens was only $310 at a gun shop that is now known to be higher priced than others. I believe that I could have gotten it at Wal-Mart for around $280.

That being said, I think your budget is realistic for what you want.

if you are referring to me I put a nikon buckmaster 4.5x14x40.. Could not be more happy for what I paid.. It seems like a much higher dollar scope.. Also I use the Deadnutz mount only now for all my rifles.. They are top notch quality..no lapping, Very stout, and nice craftsmanship.

The Rem. 700 series of rifles are not well designed for hunting. They lack three position safeties, a decent ejector, extractor and CRF.

There are better designs. I prefer the M70 in some of its forms and the Kimber of NY rifles.

I think the new Ruger Hawkeyes are nice. I have one in 30-06, and hope to add a 308 soon.

I agree, Remington 700 SPS Tactical is badass. I've got a Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x on mine, its a shooter. With my far from matchgrade reloads, using cheap Remmy Core-Lokt bullets, I'm getting 2" groups at 200 yards. The factory fodder did 2.5". The H-4895 powder I'm using is way cleaner than what Remington uses, that is some dirty s***.

The Howa 1500 series is worth taking a look at my buddy has one and the action on it is pretty darn nice.

Check out the Tikka. If you can get an older Whitetail Hunter grab that other than that it seems like people have good luck with the T-3. My Whitetail hunter shoot under a MOA. Good Luck

Basically anything from Remington, Savage, CZ Tikka, Howa, Browning, Winchester, Ruger, etc has fans. Find the one you like and pick it. Today there seem to be a lot of good shooters coming out of the factories. With today's market if you don't put out a 1MOA shooter you aren't competing. Pick what feels good and what looks good.
