OK, I'm fed up and I want to get new nipples for my revolvers. But even after some searches and reading a dozen or so threads that skirt around the topic I still can't find any sort of definitive list of which caps fit which OEM and aftermarket nipples.

And by "fit" I mean that they don't need pinching and don't need to be pushed on with Superman like strength that significantly stretches and reforms the copper cap.

If we can get a good number of replies my offer is to update this first post with a regularly edited table that puts all the data into one table for all to see at a glance.

I'm looking for data on the stock OEM nipples for different guns and manufacturing dates as well as all the currently made aftermarket nipples.

If you could write the replies in the format shown below that would be helpful.

In the "Caps tried and results obtained" portion please detail the need for anything like pinching needed or strong seating force needed or if they simply slipped on and were adequately seated with moderate thumb pressure. Also include any reports of frequent failures to ignite if you encountered such.

Include any other interesting finds.

TO make it easy to reply I've put the data input formats in a separate post below. Just left click and drag over the text to select it all then Ctl-C or right click and "Copy". Then in the Quick Reply area hit Ctl-V or right click and "Paste". Then fill in after the dashes.

Table of data to follow- It's up to you lot now.... :D

EDIT- OK, I'm mostly asking for data related to revolvers. But to help make this a "One Stop Shopping" experience submit your caplock rifle experience as well and I'll include a portion of the data table for caplock side hammer rifles and muzzle loading shotguns as well.

Oh, what the hell, if folks post modern inline data I'll even put that in the table.

This is the best I found, never been wrong about the cap size. Just read down the list till you find your revolver.

TOW's blued hardened steel nipples are excellent and they look original and don't stand out like others do when on the revolver. Some like the stainless steel nipples they carry but I think they stand out a little to much. But they are tough, never flatten.

BCRider....what is the issue? I have a Pietta that I had FTF issues with even using #10 the nipples had rings on the outsides that actually hung up on the caps rim. An hour with a wetstone smoothed the outsides and I now use #11 caps.

Yes I pinch my caps and use a piece of trex to make sure my caps are pressed on well BUT I have had one of my CB revolvers charged for three years and no FTF isssues even after I dropped it into a puddle.

THe problem i found with pinching caps is i could never pinch them the same. Some times i pinched them to hard and i couldnt get them on sometimes not hard enough and they would fall off.

I'm also finding that the caps are shredding something fierce. It's a rare nipple that has a cap remnant of any sort on the stock OEM nipples.

I'm not using overly large charges either. 29 to 30 gns behind a .457 RB. The Remingtons I've got are bad enough but the 1860's are even worse. And THOSE two love to spew hot shards out the side and then they fall between my palm and the grip. Really causes some anxious moments when shooting them in a CAS match.... :D

The TOW list is great if we're shopping for new nipples. But it doesn't help us match up brands and sizes of caps to stock OEM nipples.

As for modifying the nipples I'm most certainly not above doing that or lack the skill. But I'm stuck since the most readily available caps around here are CCI #11. But they are too big for the stock nipples on any of my revolvers. So the TWO list will certainly help me find new nipples that I can use for my supply of caps.

I never tire of relating my past transactions with Track of the Wolf. They make their own SS nipples and they can and will tell you what cap and cap manufacturer they designed their nipples to. In my experience no one else is that direct or correct.
In fact I just received a set from them for my new 61 colt navy.
Call me old fashion but I never order nipples online, I prefer to talk to a human and they are human, in fact I was able to talk to the machinist/designer the first time I ordered nipples for my 62 colt police.

I have no reservation about throwing away the OEM Italian nipples without even trying them. Pinching caps, hot shard burns, crossfires, and jamming aren't worth it.
By the way both my 62 and 61 colts TOW nipples were designed to #11CCI caps and they fit perfectly.

Treso nips or Slix nips and Remington #10 or #11 caps will make all your ignition issues go away.
Treso nips were made to fit Remington #11 caps
Slix-Shot nips were made to fit Remington #10 caps

Remington #10 and #11 are the same dimensions, but #10s are a bit deeper.
See the article below.

Pietta Colt and Remington repros from 2005 thru 2013 and all take Remington #10s. The cones are interchangeable between the Colt and Remington revolvers.

TOW cones for ASM Walker use Remington #11s just fine.

Original ASM cones for Colt Pocket Police use Remington #11s just fine.

Original Palmetto cones for Remington New Model Pocket use Remington #11s just fine.

Pedersoli double guns from 1977 to 2012 use Remington #11s just fine.

+1 to TRESO nipples and Remington #11's

For stock Pietta nipples on my Remington's I have success with RWS 1075's

+1 on that Pancho, first thing I do is remove the origianl nipples and throw them away and put on the replacement nipples from TOW. :)

For those that have run the Slix Shot nipples did you find that the relief hole performs as it should and the caps stay more or less intact and on the nipples?

What about the same for the TOW nipples that fit the CCI #11's?

My Uberti Remingtons aren't too bad for burning me. But the two 1860's I've got in .44 LOVE to throw hot and spikey shards down between the frame and my palm. I'd far rather have to pick them off the nipples than burn myself.

I have not used Slix-shot nips for very long, but first impressions are that the caps stay put better than on Treso nips.

Do you find that they slip on very easily but are hard to pull off (unfired)?

I test fit some the other day on a Pietta Remington, every time we shook the cylinder hard one would fall off (don't know if it was the same chamber).

I found a pile of CCI #11's last night and they fit on slix-shot nipples quite well. CCI #10's?...not so much. They wouldn't go on at all.

I figure it would cost me about $400. to replace all the nipples on my guns if i went with a set that cost about $30.

I get flamed because i use substitutes insted of blackpowder and i get flamed for putting a taller front sight on my colt rather then cut the hammer becasue thats not how they did it back in the 1800s but did they have tresco or slick shot nipples back then?

Good point Bower. But, if you leave the factory nipples on expect some troubles down the road IF you are going to use that revolver hard.

All I can add is that when using the original Italian's, I always was futzing around with different caps, and pusher-sticks, and never was really happy. Treso's on the guns I shoot regularly now were a good investment. I've got a few more needing nipples now and based on the recommendations I'll give TOW a call. Good presonal experiences shared have value, so thnks for sharing.

And Bower-Pard: The asbestos suit fits you well. Shrug off the flames and enjoy. You seem to be having lots more fun than the average C&B shooter, and that's the goal, ain't it? And one way to save a few bucks for the multiple-revolver shooter is a set or two of Treso's (or TOW's) and a nipple wrench. Just pull them out and move them. Remove them from your cylinders when you clean your revolvers, and store them in a 35mm film can (does anyone use 35mm film anymore? <sigh>), and then install them in whatever you're gonna shoot today when needed. One side benefit is that you'll never have a nipple frozen into a cylinder again. $300 to upgrade your collection? Sound like ya'll are building up a nice box-o-pistols.

That's a great idea. :)
