I have owned a few shotguns over the years, but mostly shoot handguns. Recently bought a Mossberg 500. It came with a 28" barrel and three chokes. Have some S&B lead and Federal plated 00 buck that I would like to shoot it it. What choke should I put in the barrel?

What are the three chokes you have? If you have one, I would start with an IC and go from there. Are you just looking to make some holes in stuff at the range? Will you be using around the house or for hunting? It would be easier to make a recommendation if you provided some more information.

For right now the 00 buck is just to put holes in a target and see what the gun will do.

Each shotgun barrel is a law unto itself. You'll need to try each choke with each brand of ammo to find which one suits your purpose. It wouldn't surprise me if you got tighter patterns with the more open (mod or ic) chokes. It happens that way sometimes.

Modified seems to pattern well from my 500 / 28'' bbl.

Improved cylinder is a close second.

Full choke has a more ragged pattern. I beleive trying to compress large shot that far causes some distortion of the pattern. This theory seems to hold up since it got even worse using an extra full choke tube in the same barrel.

All you can really do is pattern the gun for yourself.

Another thing to try is using 2 3/4'' shells as opposed to 3''. The 2 3/4'' shells pattern the best in most of my guns.

Luck.
