I'm getting a bonus check from work next week and as long as my wife doesnt find out about it I'm going to by my first 1911....

Basically its just going to be a once in a awhile target gun plus I just want one in my collection...
I dont want to spend anymore than $500-$600 dollars...

Can anyone recommend the best Colt for me?

I'm thinking Colt because it was the original 1911.....

Is there any reason to go with a different 1911 which may be a better gun? are there even Colts in this price range...

I would also like one with an Ambi safety if I can get one Not necessary but a plus.....Thanks for any information....drf

A Colt Delta Elite for $500-600 dream on!

Not that I think they are really worth much more than that, but you'd be hard pressed to find one around here for under $1000.

Most new Colt's I see at shows are priced $650 and up, mostly up. Prices around here are usually about as low as you'll find.

I would get a new roll marked, blued, 1991A1
I agree with this recommendation, except I prefer stainless. My stainless NRM Colt 1991A1 cost $550 which is probably a middle of the road price; you may be able to do better if you shop around.

If you want a Colt, get either model numbers 01991 (blue) or 01091 (stainless). It's the same pistol, Series 80 Government Model. You should be able to get either one for less than $600. I got the stainless for $575.

That is a good price. I paid $609 + tax for my stainless nrm. I had to have a blued Colt then, and Ipicked up an orm Colt , LNIB, for $349.

in the $500 range? get an m1991a1 stainless or blued or parkerized, whatever your flavor. i see them new on gb around that price. any NRM i have seen in my area is over 8 bills. colts are ULTRA-RARE IN MS. saw two nice looking used xse colts in a shop this past weekend. very nice used guns, both stainless, an officers and guberment model. veryy nice except for unbelievable matching GOUGE MARKS (NOT LIGHT SCRATCHES) at the takedown latch. still wanted $799 and $899 respectively:barf:
i have a gold cup, combat commander, and a stainless m1991a1 that is a clarks right now getting sights. and they are not for sale.;)

Skip the suggestions for the Delta Elite, Defender et al.

He wants if for $500-600 and it's his first 1911. I wouldn't in good concience recommend a 10mm or small gun as a first 1911. Not that they are bad guns, but not a first 1911.
