Which courier for gun return?

I have to send a handgun back to Kel-Tec and I'm not sure who will ship a handgun? Will the US Postal Service ship it or will I have to ship with UPS or FedEx?

Anything else I should know about shipping a handgun please let me know since this will be the first time I've done so.

The Post Office will not mail a handgun for an American Commoner, they will only take pistols from FFLs. But if your dealer will handle it for you, mail is cheaper than air freight.

To ship UPS or FedEx you must go to a terminal; retail outlets and contractors like Office Depot will not accept guns. They will only ship guns by next day air service which reduces pilferage by employees and increases profits. BATF requires you to declare the contents to the carrier so you can't legitimately sneak one onto a ground shipment as a showerhead. But do not identify the contents on the box and do not make it obvious that the destination is a gun company. Kel-Tec CNC Industries, Inc. will do.

I buy used Kel-Tec pistols that have occasionally had major parts abused and musty be returned from Texas to Florida. P-32s & P-3AT with $300 insurance cost me less than $10 via UPS ground with P-11s a few dollars more. I ship them as machine parts and do not include the words Kel-Tec in the address. I do this based on my reading of the 1986 Gun Control Act and feel better knowing that the BATF has issued letters such as this

Will Kel-Tec send you a shipping label, or is this on your own dime? That saves a lot of hassle (because you can then take it to any UPS outlet, including the normally anti-gun "UPS Store"), as well as money, typically $50-$60. I've had the UPS agent (and the distribution center is 35 miles away) slice open the box I just sealed, ask me to take out the handgun that I just packed, and unload and show clear.

Ask your dealer if he can ship it by Priority Mail, using his FFL. Offer to pay the postage plus a few extra bucks, a case of beer or whatever. If you bought the gun from him, he might even forgo the extra charge.

Another hint: put the gun in the box it came in and put that inside a cardboard box, with padding (e.g., wadded-up newspaper) to take up the space. If KT is like the other gun companies I've dealt with, they will send the gun back in a new box. Unless, of course, you like having extra gun boxes piling up.

When addressing the company, don't spell out the full name as an obvious gunmaker's name on the box is like putting a "steal me" sign on it. Just put "K&T" or something on it.
