Hi guys, I'm pretty new to the world of shotguns and only got into it via an old, free 870 wingmaster a buddy game me.

My question is ... which determines what size shell I can use; the receiver or the barrel?

I ask because the gun came with a long 26 or 28" ribbed barrel with 2-3/4" only marked on it. I don't hunt so I bought a 18.5" replacement barrel with 2-3/4" and 3" marked on it. I have no real reason to run 3" over 2-3/4", but i'd like to know just for the knowledge.

Thanks
Sean

Both.

If the SN on the receiver ends in M the receiver is designed for 2 3/4" and 3" shells. If it does not end with an M it is 2 3/4" only. The barrel must also be marked to accept 3" shells.

Just remember that because a barrel is marked as 3", it doesn't mean you are forced to use 3" shells only.
The recoil alone from most 3" magnum shells is enough to turn many people away from shotgun shooting forever and that applies to 20 guage too.

Both the receiver and barrel have to be 3" capable to use those shells. Stick with 2 3/4".

And congrats, I wish people would give me FREE 870s....

Dumb luck really. A buddy's mom was moving out of her house and found it in the attic along with a Remington 550-1. She hates guns and he lives in providence so they gave them both to me. I didn't complain.
