THR,

I am interested in the EOTECHs for my Rock River AR CAR A4. Mainly I shoot paper, pratice tactical situations, and shoot out to 300 meters (would like to hit 500). My tactical shooting is within 15 - 100 meters, and is basically shooting from target to target while moving throughout obstacles.

Which model (511-552) do you think, and why? I would also like to place flip up/down iron sights on the rifle incase of 911 necessity.

Please advise.

Eotech 512 with a LaRue QD mount is a good setup.

The 512 uses readily-available AA batteries that last up to 1100 hours. It isn't NV compatible, but it sounds like you're not going to be using it for that anyway.

Aimsurplus.com has them for $377.99 with 1 cent shipping I believe.

I have a 512 & a 552 -- and I must say, the next time i need to use the night vision on the 552 will be the first time  I like the AA battery version because if worse comes to worse, I can find the batteries at the 7-11 and I don't need the night vision so I prolly should have stayed away from that

As previously indicated, if you'll likely not use the night vision capability, don't bother with it. I have a 512 and like it (get Lithium batteries from Radio Shack), but if I were on the verge of getting an Eotech now, especially if I contemplated having a rear BUIS, I might be looking at the new 516 model. The 516 is basically the 512 with the controls moved to the left side instead of having them in their awkwardly placed location on the back of the sight as on the 512.

I like the fact that mine uses AA batterries that I can find anywhere, but I hate the fact that it doesnt use the CR123s that my surefire does.

I have the 512 AA model. I have shot 150 rounds through my rifle with it. I have absolutely no complaints. Don't get the one that uses lithium batteries. And it sounds like you don't need NVG compatibility. EOTech is top notch! Better qaulity and less expensive than AIMPOINT. It is a great investment and you won't be disappointed.

My 512 uses AA batteries and currently has lithium AA batteries installed.

ETA - The lithium AAs seem to have longer legs, but I can pop in regular AAs should I need to.

I think you should get some real time on both units before you speak of quality and such of each unit. I have tested optics from each company and used themin the feild and in classes with high round counts and i can tell you this bar far there are more faliures with eotechs than aimpoints you are wrong on the quality issues. so dont pass on bad info. when you have no idea...

Eotech has been plaqued with issues from lousy battery life. to lose of zeros to poor tracking also falling off guns under heavy fire.

(eotech says use no locktight)
aimpoint 50-80 K hours of on time

eotech lucky to get 1000 hours i havent gotten over 600 on set of batteries and we have seen several that drain the batts just sitting in the safe, also they are know for the battery box springs to compress and lose contact.... the shut off is a huge issue with units that have requested it removed eo says no way.
in about 80 % of classes i have taught or attened i have seen these issues first hand.,. more with eo than aimpoint...

i own no less than 5 EOos and 6 AP's

The 557 is a great option. I have the 553 which is the same sight with the controls on the back instead of the side. This thing is all but bullet proof.

the eotech is a great sight and my sight of choice and one rides on top of my ar at home. and of course a buis as well, if you have any optic it is my oipinion that a buis is a neccisity. i use the adjustable rear sight the matech that you zero at 25 and then you can adjust the range with the lever on the side. it is robust and works perfectly. as far as model numbers of eotechs i am not to in the know about which is which. i look at features. i went with the model that takes "aa" batteries as they are chea and easy to find. if you use this model and you plan to do alot of shooting an getting therifle hot i suggest lithium batteries. the3 volt models are smaller in over all size, but the batteries can be expensive for some and hard to find for others. they also offer models that are nods comatiable but if you don't own or plan to own or use nods with the eotech than you don't need that set up as well the non nods models are cheaper.i got my eotech for $359 i think and it works great and i suggest them to any one. i got mine from www.riflescopes.com

here is link to the buis i use.

I love mine

Not sure of the number but it's the non-nvg setting, AA battery model. I'd look but it's out in the truck :) I've got it mounted on a Rock River and have shot probably 500 or so rounds through it no prob. Simple to operate and 1 moa dot allows precise aiming. For my .02 one of the best things going for it us that it co-witnesses with my folding GG&G rear and stock front irons. Something happens to the Eotech, just flip up the rear sight. I haven't intentionally abused it, but I've done anything but baby it. IF they weren't so expensive I'd be interested in one of the new magnifyers you can mount behind it. Anybody have any experience with those? I guess the only thing bad I can say about them is that their only 1X.
