I am looking to buy a quality flashlight to keep in my vehicle for emergencies, etc.

The 3 flashlights I am thinking about are:

1 -- Surefire 6P (the classic)

2 -- Surefire G2 Nitrolon (new lower price)

3 -- Pelican M6 (new lithium model)

For an everyday flashlight to keep in my vehicle -- what are the pros and cons of these flashlights?

Any other flashlight ideas?

Thanks for your opinions...

I have a number of Streamlight Scorpions. I've had good luck with them and they always worked well. I like the self contained switch and rubber covered barrel. They are around $35, about half the price of the equivalent Surefire. The one in my pocket is the first I bought over 8 years ago its still going strong.

To stash here and there, I suggest the G2, since it is quite cheap - you should be able to find them for less than $40.

For everyday carry, ie, your "CCW light", I suggest the E2E-HA.

Take a look on Candlepowerforums.com - under the dealer's section there was a sale on OD g2's by Tactical Warehouse, less than $30, if remember correctly.

I think I going with the SureFire G2 at about $30 -- sounds like the best deal for a vehicle flashlight.

The company I work for issues us Pelican Stealthlights. Run on 4 AAA batteries, waterproof to 300 feet & approved for use in explosive atmospheres. Fit in a glove box or console real nice and darn bright too. (not that I have any of them in my car) They pay $22 each for 'em.

I use LED flashlights since the batteries last far longer than with other types.

i just got a shipment of pelican M6 in. i am very impressed and thats alot coming from me, a dyed in the wood surefire fanatic.
they are brighter than the 6 series surefire and have a focusable beam. plus they include batteriesas well as a carry case.
i'v posted a special for THR members on the for sale forum at $39.

I recently got a G2 and I love it.

The only drawback to the G2 is that it does not have a lockout feature -- so if the tail-cap button is pressed, it will come on. There are potentially some safety issues under the right circumstances--i.e., the flashlight is on, gets hot, is in contact with flammable materials, etc.

Probably not an issue for a car light...

Since it is for your vehicle, I personally would consider (as I have) only flashlights with some mechanism to keep them from coming on. I do use the Streamlight Scorpion at home (with a G2 on the list) but in my truck, I keep a Pelican Stealth Light. It has a little "key" that locks the switch in the off position...

In my vehicle, where I may be WAAY away from spare batteries, just prefer the extra battery life and more sure "off" capability of a good 4-AA flashlight.

I would also look at the Brinkmann Legend LX. $20.00 at Wally World. Two 3 volt lithium batteries just like the Surefire at a fraction of the price. Perfect for a vehicle light.

I recently bought a set of three Coleman flashlights at Costco. One is small enough to fit on a keychain. One is medium size that works on AA batteries and has a rear pushbutton. The third is a large size that can be used as a lamp by sliding the body of the flashlight. The medium size seems to be a less expensive version of the Streamlight and Surefire. Total cost for the three Coleman flashlights: $18.:)

I just bought a G2 and this is a great little light. I'll probably purchase a couple more, so I can keep one in the car's toolbox and one in my main toolbox.

I carry the G2 next to my extra magazine when I go out at night.

Now, I'm foaming at the mouth to get a Surefire rifle mount type light for my AK. :)

... the addiction just never stops. :)

carlos. the last time i spoke w/ craig fisher of fobus he said the were working on a picatinny rail/handguard for AKs that you would be able to mount a FAS (surefire light mount) to. i have a permanant back order on new stuff so i'll let you know when i have one in hand.
as soon as i close this deal w/ surefire i'm going to post anothe G2 sale. you might want to try the pelican M6, too.
glad you like the light.

I have had a scorpion, and I'd definatly go with the G2. Just a better product. That says a lot because I consider a Scorpion a fantastic product.

I'd go with Scorpion or G2 long before the Pelican M6. I used it, was not impressed at all. Maybe if the M6 was $20 or so (same price range as a Legend LX).

Thats the other thing to consider, the Legend LX is $20 and can be found at any descent walmart.

I was thinking about this a bit more this morning... And yes, I'm about to change/add to my opinion. But let me tell you my reasons.

I am a flashlight nut. I may get caught without clean underwear, but I'll never be without a flashlight (or 2 or 3). I have decided to put my Scorpion back in my truck. Why? Well, even though you can't "lock" it off, the button is recessed, so it won't come on if pushed up against a flat surface.

But the biggest thing I like about the Streamlight Scorpion as my truck light is this... Since you can focus the beam from spot to flood, you can (and I have) use it like a spotlight, and light up an area that is in total darkness across a good couple of acres. That's a need that I personally would only come across in my truck. The Surefire beam is cleaner and brighter, but it's also not focusable for spot use. I was truely amazed the first time I did that outdoors, searching for armadillos on my father-in-law's property. He went out and bought one the next day after seeing mine shine so powerfully so far away.

I still suggest keeping a AA or D cell light in your car too for roadside tire changes, or times when you may need your flashlight for a couple of hours or more (again, depends on what sort of stuff you get yourself into :) ) And I do agree that the Surefire product is a GREAT flashlight, and would be my first choice if I were LEO or needed a good light in town, but in my truck, where there's no telling where I might need it, I choose the Scorpion over the Surefire because the beam is more effective at longer distances, and because the 'on' button is less likely to be accidentally activated.

OnSlaught, the only thing I have to add to your last post, was that if you are going to have a AA light, make sure it has lithium AA batteries in it. Otherwise the weather will kill the alkaline AA batteries and you may be stuck without a light when you need it.

Right now the only retail available Lithiums in AA are from Energizer, about $10 for 4 batteries. But well worth it, they actually help the brightness and runtime on Luxeon direct Drive lights. Also, they weigh less than alkaline AA batteries, and have a longer shelf life...
