Beretta 92FS
I once owned that gun, one of the ones I should have NEVER traded. Of course, I lost my shirt on the thing but did enjoy it for the several years I owned it  (probably between about three to five years). I am not sure if I have the model correct. The one I had was stainless. It was a beauty. If I had one now, all I would do is possibly a trigger and Tritium three-dot sights. That's it!

Dave, I understand +P is a SAAMI spec. but I have yet to encounter a manufacturer who recommends a steady diet of it.

Every pistol submitted for military contracts is designed to handle a steady diet of it. They don't shoot ANY non+P in the military, as the NATO round is a +P round. Pistols designed with the hope of winning military contracts are absolutely designed to have their actions cycled at +P speeds; it's the "standard" pressure rounds that the design has to accommodate

Better to stay within published specs.

Agreed. That's why I'd never recommend +P+ stuff; there's no standard, so you have no idea what the pressure is. Could be a billion PSI.

The recoil spring must allow time extraction, ejection and the magazine spring to present a new cartridge.

That's all true. And those challenges are present in the variations between non+P rounds as well. Almost any modern, full-size service pistol is designed to accommodate the 10% extra pressure of +P 9mm. Will it wear the springs faster? Probably a little. Will it present reliable functioning before the springs wear out? Not if the manufacturer did their job. A full size 9mm designed in the last 3-decades that won't reliably feed +P is an engineering failure, or out of spec.

I voted S&W M&P. I prefer it over my Glock because of the ergonomics for my hand. They are all excellent guns, IMHO. Good Luck!

Friends dont let

Friends own or shoot Glocks. Another vote for Walther P99AS or PPQ. I also a have a P226 but is has been safe for years.

I have a number of 9mms but one that I recently aquired that is quickly becoming my favorite is the Beretta PX4 Storm. It is one of the smoothest shooting autoloading pistols I have ever handled. It has noticably less felt recoil than other similar sized 9s. After nearly 1000 rounds (using just about every type of ammo out there) I have had zero malfunctiones of any kind (knock on wood). Worth adding to your list of consideration.

Glock's, S&W M&P's, CZ's and SA XDM's are are very reliable firearms. I would urge you to choose between them on the basis or ergonomics - see which one fits your hand the best. I shoot a G-17, S&W M&:p. S&W99, Sig 226 and CZ-75. For home defense or concealed carry I would opt for a semi auto without an external hammer or any external safeties thus my preference for either of the S&W's mentioned or the Glock.
