Which Garand?

+1 for anyone who wants a Garand and is in driving distance of the North or South store. Besides getting a rifle that will probably be a ways above the grading minimums, there's just the sheer fun of walking into a place where there's racks and racks of Garands, carbines, and whatnot for sale (though sometimes that can be painful too -- South Store had a 5-digit S/N Garand that had been welded up into a blank-only gun for a VFW post somewhere for a long time . . .)

Well, I got a call saying I got the job I interviewed for three weeks ago. Which will make getting to Ohio a lot easier. I'll just have to make sure I bring someone familiar with Garands to make sure I don't get a piece of crap.

Congrats on your job. Don't worry about bringing someone else along. The staff will help you pick out a rifle if you ask them for help. Other customers will likely be willing to help you out as well. As for them being a piece of crap, well, they will be as described. Even the most piece of crap M1 there will still function.

It just depends on you to figure out what your priorities on a rifle may be. I got a field grade that is far from pretty, but had a really nice bore. It shoots pretty well. You could try to get a rifle with the SN in certain ranges, a really nice looking rifle, or a really good shooter, or any other combination.

I recently bought my sixth garand(import) oct 43 dated SA receiver mar 52 SA barrel.I refinished it,got a new gas tube and got repro locking bar sights. It's turning into a nice rifle. I picked up an underwood carbine friday, changed it back to ww2 configuration and put a repro m1a1 stock on it.I have yet to shoot them.will be going to a friends farm this summer to shoot my arsenal m1, m1 carbine,1919a4,norinco m97 .I am starting a ww2 living history group and everything I have is ww2 vintage or repro ww2 vintage.I have shot m16's,m21's,m249's and the m60 .they're all fun to shoot ,but I prefer garands for accuracy(the m21 was very accurate, though the recoil was severe) and comfort shooting.
