A friend of mine sent me and email and informed me that he wanted to get a Glock 33. I told him it was a fine round and a reliable weapon but I pushed him more towards the Glock 36 for the CCW reasones as to why he wants to buy one. He's pretty set on a Glock so I figured I'd throw another curveball his way and added the G30/32 into the mix. But what do you think?

Yes, you did read the post before answering right? He's only set on the company not the model.

Yes, and there's nothing in the original post about your friend wanting advice on a gun, just that he had decided upon one, and informed you of that decision.

I had a Glock 23 for years. If I had to do it over again, it's the one Glock (had 4, at one point) I would have kept.

If I had the choice to make again, I'd go for a 19 or 23. Both good, all-around sizes. I don't find the 26/27 subcompacts to be significantly smaller, and the compact 19/23 is still large enough to be shot well. Great platform.

The first email sent was simply. "Im wanting to get a glock 33. Good Choice??" I sent a long drawn out email back about ballistics and finding ammo in FL. He still really likes the .357 sig. The biggest firearm he has is a .380. His only shooting experience is shooting stuff I own. I figured the .45 would be a better choice just because it is effective, doesn't have the "snap" that sig has and is easier to find ammo for.

Any gun chambered in .357 Sig, much less a compact, is a poor choice for a first "real" handgun.

If he insists on Glock, then the aforementioned 19 (best pick for him) or the 23 (second best pick for him)

If he insists on a subcompact Glock, then the 26 wins that one hands down.

Meanwhile, have him look at the S&W M&P, fullsize and compact version, along with the Springfield XD in 4" or 3" configurations. These are all available in the better choices of 9mm or .40

.

I would go w/ a mid-size Glock -- 19, 23, or 32. The subs are nice shooters, but I just don't like the short grips. The mid size guns fit better and are still very compact and easy to carry

G23

My G23 in .40 Short & Weak is great for CCW, and there is an option of dropping in the StormLake .357 Sig barrel if he wants to, for less than an extra $150, IIRC. The 23 is not quite a compact, but a midsized weapon and a great shooter. For the "first pistol" have him look at .22s to develop some basics.

Glocks, luv em

Favorite Glocks
33: screaming velocity (Glod Dot 125 @ 1,315 FPS), less kick than model 27, easy to hide.
39: same grip with slightly thicker slide compared to 33 and big 45 bullets.
32 or 38 same as above except larger platform.
Yea, the 357 sig and 45 GAP are my favorites.

Next would be the Glock 30, 27 or 23c

IMO the Glocks 45s in acp or GAP are very controlable.

Glock 19

I'm a fan because:

* Relatively inexpensive
* 9MM rounds are easy to get, and to barter with you you're ever in that position
* It's reliable
* The compact size makes it relatively easy to carry concealed

Great pistol, especially for the money.

I have the following Glocks

21-SF
30-SF
34
17
19C
26

Since you don't have the 9mms listed, I went with the G30-SF. It's a whole lotta gun, and quite accurate, and easy to conceal. The following is my order of preference for carry:

19C
26
17
30-SF
21-SF
34

Any way you slice the choice, Glock is a fine, accurate and reliable pistol.

How about NONE OF THE ABOVE?

Glock makes the best .9mm & a great .40, eventhough I prefer a Hk or Sig in .40.

If you are set on a .45ACP then just get a 1911 style and be done with it.

IMHO:
.38/.357, S&W, Ruger or Colt Revolver
9mm, Glock 17, 19, 26, 34, Beretta 92FS, maybe a XD.
.45, 1911 style Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Les Baer, Ed Brown or other custom pistol.
.40, Sig or Hk.

.357 SIG is a poor choice for a first gun, it's expensive and not nearly as common as other calibers.

The Glock 36 is also a poor choice, as it only holds half as many rounds as a Glock 19 in a gun that's almost identical in size.

Have him get a G19 or G23 if he's going to carry; a G17 if he's going to just target shoot.

Glock 19. Poll choices=fail.

G36 would be my choice if forced to use the above options.

I bought some .357 Sig once to feed an M&P chambered for it at the range. Never did that again. It was the most expensive range session I ever had. Avoid uncommon calibers for guns you wish to shoot often.

I voted 33. If he wants a 33, let him get a 33, there's nothing wrong with it.

Also, he could say he has a Sig and not be completely wrong. :neener:

I voted for the 32 because it's the same size as the 19, which (for me) has proven to be a great blend of magazine capacity, concealability, and shootability. I used to be a diehard .45 guy, but the 19 has opened me up. It replaced my XD 45 compact as my carry gun, even though the two are almost exactly the same size.

I would say all of the above. The great thing about the 32 and the 33 is you can swap out the barrels and make it a 9mm or .40 S&W as well. I am kind of partial to this little guy though:

I vote for the G30, 10+1 of .45. It's what I carry most of the time. For me, the slight decrease in width of the G36 is not enough of a trade-off for fewer rounds. I know you're asking about Glocks, and you can't really go wrong with any of them, but for slimness and ease of concealment I just got a Kahr P45. Same capacity and close to the same overall size as the G36, but thinner, and a lot thinner than the G30.

I figure that if I am willing to go with less capacity, I want the thinnest gun I can get in .45.

width: capacity:
G30 1.27" 10+1
G36 1.13" 6+1
P45 1.01" 6+1
