I want to get into trap shooting. Never shot trap at a club. Course need to find one of them too. Anyway, I have 3 choices here........Browning Lightning O\U 12 ga. 28" I\C-MOD. choke , Browning Auto-5 28" MOD. choke , Beretta Silver Pigeon O\U 28GA 26 1\2" C\IC . I used to shoot clays from a hand thrower years ago. Haven' t shot in 15 years though, I know why not. Did a lot of upland bird hunting in the old days. Was a great shot. {was a great shot} I hope I don't embarress myself. What do you guys think?

If you are going to shoot trap, I would use one of your 12 ga guns with the mod choke. It will work fine from the 16 yd line. Unless you can get a shell catcher for the A5, I would use the O/U as not to pelt the shooter to your right with empty hulls.

That 28ga Beretta would make a right nice skeet gun if you decide to shoot some skeet.

Have fun...

The Browning Lightning and use the modified barrel. It's the one best suited for trap.

The Auto 5 would be okay but ejecting a shell onto the shooter (or his guns) next to you on the trap line is a very quick way to become unpopular.

I love the 28 gauge but when it comes to trap I'm going to be choosing my 12.

If possible, find at least a 30" bbl, You will find it much more satisfying, especially if you shoot handicap events.

Start with the Lightning 28" you already have.

Personally, I don't shoot much differently with a really long barrel. 30-32" can be nice, but it's far from necessary, especially since the 12 Gauge Lightning is an overweight gun (good for trap). I wouldn't use a light 26" gun, though.

You'll know if you want a trap-specialty gun, and what you want, AFTER you shoot some, not before.

I was never particularly good with, and certainly not better, with my 34" trap single. I do fine with a 28" 12 Gauge Beretta field O/U, and I can use that gun for something besides American Trap. I sold my 34" right about the time I got a dog and needed a 12 Gauge break-action for gunning at hunt tests. Haven't missed it.

I do some after-work local league shooting, not ATA, though, and have no immediate plans to do that.

Also, if you are a bird hunter and you want to shoot more interesting and field-applicable, but unofficial, rounds, like Wobble, or even better, Progressive Wobble, a specialty trap gun isn't the best choice anyway.

Actual registered American Trap involves very limited gun movement, compared to other shotgun disciplines (unless you are shooting in 20+ MPH winds). Hence, real Trap guns are designed for smooth swings in a limited range of horizontal motion and almost no vertical movement. Some shoot extremely high, so you "float the bird" way over the rib in your field of vision. They can range from suboptimal to useless for anything else, even Wobble Trap, and they can also detract from your overall shotgunning skills. But ATA is serious competition, so it uses specialized guns just like benchrest rifle, etc.

Hence, I'd start with the Lightning, and go from there. That's a pretty good middle-of-the-road shotgun, not too quick but not too slow, and its heft is helpful at the range.

I have shot better since the beginning with semi autos. Not that you havent already considered this but if you havent you should look into it further. I would not recommend that A5 though, they are great field guns but are just not quite right shooting at targets. Since you seem to have a couple of doubles though you might as well use them for skeet. The lightning will be the best choice im sure but I would be sorely tempted not to just use the 28 for everything.

I shot trap for years until I finally got tired of it. I used a wide variety of guns, and finally settled on an old Beretta 682 Trap over/under with adjustable cheekpiece. Wonderful gun. Traded it away last year for an AR.
