Which heat shield should I get?

Ok I don't want to debate whether a heat shield is necessary or cosmetic; I've made up my own mind on that issue. What I would like to know, from someone who has been using one for a few years or more, is which one to get? I have a mossy 500; the ones I see in store are cheap, flimsy metal ones that most gun forums say to stay away from. I have read some info about the John Masen polymer shields, but can't find anything current, most info is from 08-09. Others say stay away from the metal ones because they loosen up and rattle. Is there anyone out there who has had a heat shield on their gun for several years and can give me some advice?
Thanks,
ZK

As someone who had a heatshield on their mossberg 500. I'll say this, buy which ever will best fit in your garbage can when you're done with it.

I bought my 500 used, and it had the heatshield on it at the time. All it did was to make cleaning difficult and it moved under recoil to the point it would lock up the gun. Unless you are bayonetting stuff a heatshield just "looks cool"

The only ones that worked as intended for years on end were the heat shields used on GI trench guns. They worked because thy were locked into place by screws that were set into notches machined into the bottom of the barrels of the shotguns they were mounted on.

Never used one before.. but the best one I have seen so far debuted at he shot show this year, from mesa tactical.. i dont think its in production yet.

I got mine from Midway, it's a Mossberg original blued like the gun. They have parked version also if your's is parked. I like it.

Mossberg 590's have been coming with heatshields for more than 20 years. Haven't heard many complaints about them coming loose.

I bought one in about 1988 or so, and the heatshield was packed separately in the box. Now they're preinstalled on the shotgun. Not sure when that transition took place.

I suppose best depends on criteria. That thing looks as if it would add some weight, put sights or an optic high enough that one would need a pretty good cheek riser. Those sights appear to be inches above the factory bead.

The built in sling points and side saddle seem nice. I'd be interested in the price vis a vis adding those features separately.

I put the Mossberg one back on mine as much to cover the barrel as anything. I've been very happy with it and no loosening to date.

I guess a fella gets what he pays for and reaps the rewards of proper assembly as well.

I should say best as in sturdy and construction. Didnt think about those other points.. it just looks cool :)
