Which Hogs are Worth Cooking

I wish Wisconsin had hogs like down South does! it would be fun hunting another game animal beside deer in the Winter.
I live on the west side of Michigan. A buddy of mine has the same theory as you (not that I am saying anything bad)...but I know a few farmers over in the thumb area that would probably slap you if you said that in front of them. And the problem is getting bigger and heading our way.

Myself - I'd cook and eat any hog made of bacon!

I would love to go on a hog hunt. Heard lots of good stories about them. Got family in Dallas that I can stay with - just need to make the connections with land owners that want them gone, and a patient person or two in the hunting party as I've not had the opportunity to field dress one before. Someday I will go. It's on my bucket list.

Post number 5 and 6 is what I would suggest, although I have had a few sows that were not all that tasty. Barrows are the best from my experience.

any uncastrated wild hog would most likely not produce bacon.

Seriously? Not to get off topic - but bacon is only made from "domesticated" pigs? Learn somethin every day. Guess my city origins are showin... lol

Now I'm going to have to read up on how to make bacon. No way I'm going through TEOTWAWKI without it!

I'm assuming a wild sow can be used if not the boar?

Your wild hogs tend to "work it off" foraging and such. Barring a boar takes away some of his energy and feeding him well increases his fat which results in better bacon production. It's not so much as "not" producing bacon, it's a quality thing. Wild hogs are just poor at producing useful bacon due to diet and activity.
