I would like to mount a holographic sight on my M1 carbine and am wondering what sight you would recommend. I am leaning away from the Eotech sight because it is so large and expensive but am open to other suggestions. Thanks for your time.

I have a Taco ProPoint on mine with an Ultimak mount. I would recoment the ProPoint, a 5 MOA dot is OK for the .30 Carbine round but the Ultimak I do not recomend.

What's wrong with the Ultimak? Is your complaint specific to the M1 carbine, or more general?

Mike

Well, the primary idea behind a holosight on my M1 is for use as my ranch defense rifle that my wife can shoot comfortably as well. It will be used for fun shooting also, but again the primary intent will be self defense.

The M1 Ultimak is the only one I have used and it does not fit new Auto Ord. M1s even though they specificly say it does. You have to router out the stock (they did mention that) then you have to machine off about 1/8" of it for it to fit. Way to much hassle for the price.

I put an inexpensive BSA holoscope red dot on my Ruger 40 cal Police carbine and it works just fine as a "camp" rifle. Don't see why it wouldn't work on an M1 if you can find a way to mount it.

I mounted one of the lower end Aimpoints on a M-1 Carbine with the Ultimak mount.

The mount was easy to install, once I made sure it was square.

The set up worked quite well. The only problem was I didn't loc tight the rings or mount and everything came lose. Just loc tite everything and it will run fine.

I liked the Aimpoint because it's light weight and doesn't really throw off the balance of the carbine. My wife liked it alot, except for everything working lose.

Really, what's wrong with the Ultimak mount? I think they're awesome. I'm not sure what sight to use....what's the budget and the use (serious or play)?

Hmm, so now Bushnell has a Fakog out, eh? Does it use fiber optics or just batteries?

I installed the Ultimak on my Inland (Ultimak states it will drop-in fit USGI Carbine stocks, and Auto Ordnance is not USGI), and since I had a repro M1A1 stock, I did have to router it out a bit. I originally bought a $100 red dot sight for it, but was not happy with the quality and sent it right back. So, I sprung for the more costly Eotech 512, and am very pleased with it. Target acquisition is EXTREMELY fast, and the position of your head is not an issue.

HoloSight

Look into Bushnell Holosight.
It's the same as a EoTech without the aluminum guard over the top and can be had for about $200.00...

The reason I'd suggest this sight is that target acquisition is very easy, they are very well built and easy to use. They come in 2 versions. One uses AA batteries (longer) and the other uses N batteries (more compact and easier to find).

I have a few EoTechs and a couple of the Bushnell sights. They work the same and honestly am not in the habbit of dropping my rifles/carbines.

Oh, the Bushnell is made in the same factory with the same materials (except the guard).

Out of curriosity, why an M1 carbine for home defense?

Just my .02 worth...

God Bless,

USSR, from Ultimaks page...

*Will not fit, and cannot be modified to fit, any Carbines manufactured under the name "Universal" and some Carbines made by Plainfield. If you have a Universal or a non-mil spec Plainfield Carbine and you want to enjoy the benefits of the M6-B forward optic mount, it is advised that you trade it for a G.I. pattern carbine. Either a 1940's vintage or the more recent production IAI, or the new Auto Ordnance Carbines will perform better, and will be compatible with all after-market stocks and accessories.

FFMedic,

I read that as saying that the Ultimak will fit the barrelled action on the USGI, IMI, and Auto Ordnance (but not the others), but says nothing about it being a drop-in fit to any stock in particular. As I said, I had to rout out my aftermarket stock, but it was no big deal.

Yeah I knew the stock might need routered but I had to machine about 1/8" of length off the mount. It was simply longer then the space between the BBL band and receiver, not really what I expected for $100.
