Which is best, old or new GP100?

My wife and I have 20+ S&Ws, 2 Colts (she HAS to shoot a Python!) several Rugers and a few others. Out of all the handguns we have, my favorite is the GP-100. The main cause of malfunctions I've had with revolvers over the past 40 years has been with locking up because of the cylinder getting out of line. The GP-100 locks front and back which goes a long way to prevent this mis-alignment. I also have a 1976 Dan Wesson which also locks in the front, and it and the Ruger are the two guns which can handle the hot magnums. And yes, we have several N-frame Smiths. I've had four N-frame Smiths get locked up. No S&W can match the strength of a GP-100.

To answer the OP's question, I've been shooting Rugers for 40 years and I've never seen nor heard of "good" years or "bad" years. Come to think of it, I can't say the same about the other gun manufacturing companies. That may be because Ruger was the first to use CNC machine methods, which take QC out of the hands of human workers and places it with computers. Computers don't have morale problems.:p

Thanks for all the replies and input. It sounds like all the GP100s are good quality. If anything, it seems that the newer ones might be a bit better.

This past Thursday, I had a chance to look at a pair of GP100s at a shop. Indeed, the stainless 6-incher I handled probably had the nicest fit/finish of any Ruger revolver I've seen. The blued one seemed fine, too, but it was not the sort of deep blue I'd like to see on a new revolver. Anyway, I almost bought the stainless, and I may yet go back to see if it's still in the case. The price tag was $599, which might be a bit much for me to absorb in the middle of the holidays.

It's clear, too, that the Six-series Rugers have quite a following. I have actually owned four separate ones over the years, but I've yet to find one with a really good trigger. I've really wanted the Sixes to work for me, but it seems to be a gun I simply can't shoot very well.

Finally, I actually like the full lug on the GP100. That GP100 with the 6-inch full-lug barrel felt RIGHT in my hand.
