What can I expect to be more accurate, a slow-twist barrel firing a patched round ball or a fast-twist barrel firing conicals? In other words, which projectile has the promise of greatest accuracy from a muzzleloading long arm, considering that the rifling is proper for the bullet style being used? Since I can't find the b.p. rifle that I am looking for, I am going to build my own from an advanced kit. I want a target-style gun with obvious accent on accuracy. I'm just trying to decide if it should be a round-ball shooter or a conical. I realize that I could get a hybrid barrel that shoots both O.K., but I'd rather have one that shoots one or the other quite well.

It comes down to wether you want to shoot round or conical. If the barrel is good quality it will shoot the bullet accurately. The original bp target muzzle loaders were round ball and latter the conical became more popular due to the higher bc of the projectile. If you are thinking about ranges beyond 100 yds I would tend to favor the conical as they will shoot flatter.

The PRB is still considered the sine quo non of muzzleloading. Conicals give you some advantages in hunting, but for serious target shooting the folks I know go with VERY slow twist (1:62 for example) and PRB. The big thing you lose beyond 100 yards vs. a conical is velocity but that doesn't matter so much for target practice. Elevation loss can be accounted for with the right sights.

I've been experimenting with both and I LOVE PRB's. They're so much easier to load and clean up after. If you really want to have a super accurate BP conical shooter the cartridge single shots are the obvious answer. They allow you to load huge conicals without putting them through the trauma of getting rammed down the bore.

You can also get a less expensive firearm and outfit it with an upgraded barrel from Green River or the like. I've heard they can be quite accurate.

As far as I know, there are even Parker Hale Whitworth barrels supplied by manufacturer direct. If you have a woodworking shop, you can have great hobby building your own Whitworth rifle.

Having demonstrated their superiority over both the roundball musket and rifle, rifle-muskets firing conicals bullets like the Minie-ball were adopted by all major armies.
