I need to pick a +2 mag extension for my 870 Police. Any thoughts on which one I should get? I don't like that the Choate has a plastic end cap. I have no experience with other makes.
You can go the Tacstar route, Scattergun route or factory Remington. I like the Tacstar units though Scattergun is fine too. Factory Remington I don't care for, the tube itself is ok but the sling swivel attachment I dislike. The Remington is only available through Rem. Law Enforcement dealers I believe, Ebay maybe.
Of these, I believe the Wilson Combat / Scattergun is the best solution. If you have a 1 or 2 round extension, don't worry about a barrel clamp. The problem with the Remington and Tacstar mounts is that a sling swivel requires a barrel clamp whereas the Scattergun has a sling mount built in either on the side or bottom (I prefer the bottom).
I examined all three and bought the Wilson/Scattergun extension. It just seemed more substantial than the other two. It has held up perfectly under regular use, so I'm happy with it.
thanks for all the info. The main reason I want one is that I don't want to keep it cruiser ready with four in the tube (spring fatigue). With an extended tube I'd feel fine keeping four in it and have extra shells close by. That way if I didn't have time four would be enough I bet and if I did have time I could shove two more shells in
SteveSatch:
One thing about factory Remington magazine extensions (+2s and +3s) is that they do come with a barrel band to attach a sling swivel mount to. However, Wilson has a sling loop mount that is available for the 870 and 1100/1187 that fits between the locking collar of the Remington factory magazine extension and the barrel band.
It is simple to install, cheap (about ten dollars), available for side or bottom sling mount configurations, and shortens the distance between the sling mounts, which is more comfortable to carry on the shoulder since there is less weight of the shotgun riding below your waist. I bought one from Brownells a couple of years ago for my 1187 with a +3 factory extension and found it a 100% improvement over the barrel band sling mount. I also had checked with Wilson over the compatibility of the sling mount with the factory extension beforehand.
There is more than three choices. There is Choate, TacStar, Remington, Wilson/Scattergun Tech, and Vang Comp. I'd stick to the Wilson/Scattergun Tech or the Vang Comp.
