Hi all,

I have a CPO P229 (no accessory rail) that I would like to buy aftermarket sights for, but I am having an awfully hard time finding something I like.

I am a big fan of the Heinie Ledge straight-8's that I installed recently on my Glock 26, but for some reason I'm not in a hurry to install the similar Slant Pro straight-8s on my P229. This is the only sight Heinie offers for the P229 and unfortunately, it just doesn't seem like a good match for this gun. The P229 slide is rounded across the top instead of being flat like the Glock slide, so it makes for a poor fit aesthetically with the flat extension on the Heinie Slant Pro rear sight. Warren Tactical sights also have this issue.

I thought about giving the Trijicon HD sights a try, but reports are coming in that they shoot low for a lot of people because Trijicon designed them for covering the target with the front dot. This is not going to work for me. Besides, I don't like the idea of photoluminescent paint on the front sight because it requires that I learn a 3rd sight picture for when the paint is charged and glowing.

What I'm really looking for is something like this serrated GI 1911 sight by 10-8:

Does anyone else out there make a similar serrated sight for Sig P-series pistols that won't take up more space than the width of the dovetail mount? This gun is mostly going to be used for having fun at the range and I know the P229 is capable of outstanding accuracy, so I really want to exploit this to the fullest. I'm thinking a plain serrated rear like the 10-8 sight combined with a fiber-optic or tritium front would be just perfect.

Any suggestions or am I SOL?

Thanks!

bump...

No one knows where I might be able to find a plain serrated rear sight for the P229?

I went through a similar quest a while back for my SIG 220 duty gun.

You're right, the problem is that the top of the SIG slide is rounded and the bottom of most rear sight bodies is flat...so you're left with the overhang.

A popular combination for competition shooting is the Warren rear combined with a Dawson front fiber optic...but you're still going to have those wedges under the body.

I finally gave up and sent the gun off to a smith with the instruction, "non-snag carry sight that fits flush with the top of the slide". This is what he made up for me:

Very nice 9mmepiphany! The thought of going fully custom crossed my mind, but I didn't think most gunsmiths would take on this sort of job.

Is the sight dovetail in the slide wider on the P220 than on the P229? It looks like your smith had enough width to work with to make that nice ramp and what appears to be an undercut face. Not sure if this same design would fly on the P229 if the dovetail cut is narrower (from front to back). Do you happen to have any more pictures showing the detail of the rear face of the sight?

The SIG 220 and 229 share the same sized dovetail for their sights. The top of the slide on my 220 was milled out to accept this custom rear. It becomes a commitment as you won't be replacing it with another standard sight...This was my duty gun that I had carried for years and wasn't planning on ever selling.

The other thing I wanted was the flat face on the leading side so I would be able to use it to rack the slide. I had no idea what it would look like until I opened the box when it returned. The sight started off as a block of metal.

I think it looks great! If I go the custom route, I will probably go with something that fits into the stock dovetail, but with a serrated and blacked out rear face, a .140" wide x 120" deep notch, and a squared off front face for the same reason as you mentioned. With how many aftermarket sight options there are for other guns, it's kind of surprising to see how few options there are for Sigs considering how popular they are.
