I have a Savage Model 11 in 7mm-08 with the sporter weight barrel. I want to put a decent stock on it for hunting and target shooting (yes, I can only own one rifle, so I target shoot with a lightweight rifle). I am leaning towards a Bell and Carlson stock with the aluminum bedding, what does this aluminum bedding entail? The problem is, I can only find this stock for the heavy barrel rifle, would this stock still work for the sporter weight barrel, or would it look rediculous? Is there another after-market stock that I am missing for around $100? I just want something that feels nice and is rigid. Thank you very much.

I assume you're talking about a B&C Duramax stock, when you say it's made for teh heavy barreled versions. B&C also makes a line for the sporter weight barreled guns, i beleive it is called the "Carbelite" line or someting similar.

so yes there IS a line of after market sporter weight stocks for savages.

also you might want to look into the Stockade brand stocks over on teh Lock, Stock, and barrel website.

For your purposes, certainly avoid the Choate target stock...heavy as Hell!

Pillar or glass bedding on any stock is desirable...don't write off the fibreglas stocks...wood commonly warps and presses against the barrel when wet...synthetics don't. (Wood is certainly prettier!) Glass bedding is something you can do yourself from a kit from Brownells...but apply the mold release very carefully! it involves slightly overcutting the action area, swabbing in the glass goo, then applying mold release to the action and pressing it in place and letting the glass compound harden.

You might check out Boyds JRS Laminate stocks. They are about $65 if you finish them or about $125 already finished. You may have to do a little work on the barrel channel and do your own bedding.

I have a Savage, in 7mm-08, setup with a Stockade Hunting Sporter stock. It has an aluminum frame and pillars and the DIY model only costs $150. I also have the Stockade Stalker and the Duramaxx. All of them I finished and painted myself.

The Duramaxx is too heavy for the 7mm-08 and I would look into the Carbelite. Nothing wrong with just bedding and no pillars. Send me a PM if you have any questions on the stocks.
