I know this is probably asked frequently but I haven't seen a poll for one. I have a larger safe that I store my firearms in but I need something to keep by my bedside so the little one can't get a hold of it. I want something that is pretty quick to access if needed at night.

I probably would get a GunVault but while they mostly get decent reviews, there are plenty of bad reviews about them. If I am spending that much money on a small safe, I want 95% of the people to love them. So I am looking at a few cheaper options that get good reviews also.

Gun Vaults have a Standard and deluxe model. I think the deluxe has an interior light and a AC adapter (which I think would be great).

So if I go with the GunVault, for about $98 I can get a Deluxe mini 1000 or for $105 I can get a standard 2000 which has 2 shelves but none of the extra features of the deluxe model.

I'm partial to the FAS1 too.

ps - Thanks for the vote ForumSurfer!

My requirements for me when I decided to build a handgun safe are:

1) must be secure and prevent unauthorized access.
2) must not require a key, because keys can be lost or duplicated, and they slow access.
3) must not require batteries, because batteries can lose their charge when you need them the most.
4) must be able to be unlocked in the dark by touch only, within a few seconds.
5) must have versatile mounting options.

These requirements eliminated all except one type of locking mechanism – the Simplex lock. Then we proceeded to build a much heavier box than was available on the market. Most boxes will keep your kids out, but I wanted something to deter a thief a little more than a 16 gauge steel box. Ours is 3/16" (7 gauge) with many other features built in. In addition, we then added a strut to open the door and present the gun to you in the same place and orientation every time so you don't fumble for it in the dark.

Your requirement might be different and another product work better for your needs. There are lots of choices out there.

I did not vote on choices....never really been satisfied with the choices enough to actually purchase.

The FAS1 I Like That !

No problem, FAS1. My kids are old enough that I no longer need a bedroom safe or I'd have one of yours. My carry pistol is on my hip and only at bedside when I'm sleeping. Everything else lives in the safe.

Given the comparative price, you get top notch components with the fas1. I workd on atm's once upon a time. Everything from the cisco communication gear to the locks on the vault. I've seen a whole slew of small locks...lousy locks and great locks with rimfire propelled cross-pins that went off if you drilled the wrong spots or attempted to disassemble lock improperly. That simplex unit is pretty awesome for what you are paying and pretty secure. Many places charge half the price of the fas1 just for that simplex lock used on it. Given the sturdy nature of that lock and the construction of the safe, your average thief won't even get it open once he steals the safe and the floorboard you bolt it to. :) Honestly the fas1 makes the lock and steel construction of other small safes look wimpy. I've been contemplating one for my vehicles if I can figure out a way to mount it and keep it within my reach. I need a good vehicle solution since NC has so many places that require me to disarm.

^^ Thats what I was Thinking ^^

All my children have left the coop as well! We have a couple grand children to consider and I really was thinking of getting one for my truck, maybe behind passenger seat?

You could also mount it and route a master kill switch in bottom of it, doubly protect vehicle and firearm.

I really like the way it presents the firearm!
