Of these four guns, Which should be the first to first to grab for home defense, which should go on my ankle, and which should be the IWB CC gun?

I just got the USP compact 9mm and am just not in any way sure which I like better between it and the Sig P239 for CC.

the guns in order from top left to right are

1. H&K 45
2. S&W 638
3. H&K compact 9mm ss 9mm
4. Sig P239 9mm

Home defense H&K 45
and the 9mm below it for CC, dump the rest or at least have them availible.

My reasoning is to keep it simple. If I had to strap on three weapons and account for the fourth everyday several times a day, nothing will get done.

home defense = H&K HK-45. Attach a light to it.
ankle = S&W Mode 638. It's the lightest and smallest of the four.
IWB = SIG P-239. It's thinner & ligher than the H&K USP-9 Compact, so it'll be more comfortable to carry.

Nice guns!

You want opinions, I got opinions. ;) Feel free to ignore anything and everything. This is a no-brainer to me, but someone else could disagree entirely.

Home Defense = HK45. Get a weapon light and train with it. I really like the Federal HST 230gr. +P load.

IWB Carry = Sig P239. I'd tuck a couple spare mags in a pocket. I couldn't go a day without a Comp-Tac M-Tac IWB holster. Your 239 will love living in one. If the other HK has night sights and the Sig doesn't, I'd carry the HK as much as possible.

Ankle/Pocket Carry = S&W 638. I carry the 158gr. +P LSWCHP load in my snub. I'd suggest a Mika Pocket holster or a Galco Ankle Glove.

I'd carry the other HK IWB whenever you can get away with it as far as concealability goes. More ammo in the gun is always nice.

the usp compact does not have nite sights where as the sig does. I dont really see how the nite sights would be very usefull in a stressed SD situation anyways. better to religh on good shooting training and practice than gadgets like nite sights and lasers.

am I wrong?

If I even thought I needed three handguns on me for SD I would do two things ASAP.

1. Move to a safer neighborhood and/or get a safer job.

2. Replace all three handguns with a .223 Carbine or a shotgun.

woad_yurt I never understood ankle carry. The gun is furthest from where it needs to

if you spend a lot of time sitting......
or driving
carry it on the inside of the leg on your weak side

if you were at the restaurant being robbed you would have access to you gun under the table and your movements would be shielded by the table weather it has a cloth on it or not.

if you were knocked off of your feet it is within easy reach

especially for a backup piece, ankle or boot carry has many pluses

did you mean P239 in 40 perhaps?

Now that I have the USPc alot of folks including my pops say I should carry the USPc and sell the Sig P239. I just dont know if I can do that though, the gun just screams quality, accuracy, reliability and carryability.

It just has that nasty little problem of a bad weight to capacity ratio. Other than that is just a superb piece. If I traded it for something else it would have to be for another Sig, but which if I should get rid of it at all? I lean towards keeping it honestly.

The P239 is a quality gun, accurate, reliable and slim on the belt. The extra mags are also slimmer and carry better on the belt and in the pocket so the P239 gets the nod from me for CC. The only one of those that is really a viable option for ankle carry, if you choose to carry that way, is the snubby. The others would be fine for home defense. I would stash both in seperate areas of the house for easier access. I wouldn't part with any of them, mark my words, you'll regret it!! I know I always do!

Something on your ankle is more accessible than a P3AT in your pants pocket?

When you're in your car with the seat belt wrapped around anything and everything on your belt or pockets, and your legs are bent? Absolutely.

It takes me about a half second to get to the J-frame on my ankle while driving, or any time I'm sitting. It takes me 3-4 seconds to get the one in my pocket, and 6-7 seconds if the seatbelt is on, which it always is. I can do quite a bit faster if crashing the car is acceptable.

Even just standing waiting for a cue, I could get a shot off from my ankle gun in about 1.5 seconds, although it will look funny.

Ankle carry takes a LOT of practice to get used to. You will walk with a limp for a while.

Pick whichever one you shoot the best for HD and carry.

Dr. Rob,
I agree.

I also would like to point out to folks that are not familiar with Ankle Carry, something that is worth considering.

Vehicles.

Not just drivers, also passengers that are in a vehicle for long periods of time.
This is another tool in the toolbox, for both driving and being stationary.
i.e LEOs, and Taxi Drivers, are two great examples.

Can you access your gun while sitting in a vehicle and seat belted in?
The ankle works better for a lot of folks.
Add, this offers another gun, in the event serious gets more serious and the primary gun is not able to be accessed and having to go to BUG, and ankle is a proven option.

I was able to convince a armored car company , to allow drivers that use other vehicles for other tasks besides what some think of armored car drivers doing, in ankle carry of revolvers.
Just another tool in the tool box.

I have to admit, the USPc with 13rds in the mag feels noticably lighter than the P239 does with only 8 rnds.

Walking around in the dark does make me lean more towards the P239 for the mere fact that it has night sights and the USPc does not. I feel much more confident in my ability to get good shot placement with the P239 for this reason alone (during low light situations).

I dont like the night sights on my HK45, they dont really work unless you 'charge' them up with a light source. I may have to find a good night sight system for the USPc. I like the ones on the Sig but they are Siglite brand... prolly not available for HKs.

In spite of the fact Im starting to think the USP compact 9mm is the Ultimate conceal carry weapon I have to say I think the Sig would outlast the USP in a Mad Max scenario. But then I think I would just rather have a Glock 17, I dont know...... :p

Do you have a shotgun? If so use it for HD... If not use the H&K .45 for both carry and HD and put the M638 in a pocket holster as a BUG. I'm not a big fan of the 9mm. Maybe you could sell off one of those 9mm pistols and get a shotgun for HD.

First decide what you are willing to carry every day. From those choices, choose the firearm you feel most confident with, considering personal proficiency, stopping power, draw-time, and safety.

I typically just carry a sock around my ankle. Ankle holsters are a pain-in-the-ankle. If you really need one, go as light as possible.

For home defense, again choose whatever you are most comfortable with. If you're worried about stopping power in the home, buy a long gun.

There is a lot of overlap in function between them for the other duties, but the little revolver is about your only realistic choice for ankle carry. The P239 would be the most comfortable to carry IWB. Either of the HKs would be fine for home defense and can still carry IWB.
