Hi there,

I have recently been helping a older lady (60+/-, but in really good shape) i know to pick out a pistol for home defense. Her husband just died, and she is worried about possible handgun ban under obama. I have come up with three choices, Glock 17, SA XD 9, or Ruger SR9. Of these, which would you suggest? Any that would be better? Eventually, she would like to CCW.

Thanks for the help.

None for CCW, and none of she doesn't plan to practice frequently.

Seriously, you should steer her toward something like a S&W model 60LS. The operation is far simpler, and she won't need to be proficient clearing jams to have 100% confidence in the weapon.

I'd suggest a Glock 19, S&W M&P, SA XD 9, or FN FNP 9. I like the 19 over the 17 for concealed carry. The SR9 just went through a major recall, and I'd give it a little more time on the market before buying one myself. Used S&W's - particularly the aluminum frame ones like the 6903 and 5903 are also great values that carry well.

Of those she'll need to handle them first. She needs to see what fits her hand best, what's comfortable, which ones she can reach the controls on.

You and she should both take a look at http://www.corneredcat.com/TOC.aspx#FirstGun. Excellent info from a woman's perspective (site owned and mostly written by THR Moderator Emeritus Pax, AKA Kathy Jackson).
