Right now I have on hand Unique, HP-38, Bullseye and N340.

I have used both Unique and N340 for some 200g XTP's in .45ACP but never tried the HP38 or Bullseye powders. Just looking for some direction on which one to start with without having to work'em all up.

Thanks,
Dave

What do you want? Bunny fart loads, target loads, or high velocity Self Defense loads? Are we to assume 45 ACP?

230 xtp

I have never loaded the XTP 230 but Unique, Bullseye or W231 should work. I have never used the VV powder so I can't comment on that one.I personally would use 231-but that is just personal preference. Some people swear by Bullseye and Unique also has it's fans.I like 231 because it is cleaner burning than the other two, meters good and I have an 8 lb jug.If you want SD loads ,Power Pistol would be my choice.:fire:

I'm also a fan of W231/HP-38. I use almost nothing other than W231 in the 45 Auto. Of the powders you have available W231 would be my choice.

If you want full power (850 - 900 fps) at standard pressure, use Unique. For 800 fps and slower use W231.

The Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading (mine is 8th edition) has load recommendations for the 230 grain HP-XTP. I only consult manuals for load data.

Thanks Gents for a little direction on this.
I like the Unique for it's overall utility in most of my .45 loads but it can get erratic in terms of accuracy when I push it to higher velocities. Since I don't have any of the other suggested powders I think i'll try the HP38 and Bullseye. Some of these will be loaded for HD but most will likely just be target loads.

Regards,

I use 6.0-6.3 grains of Unique with 230 XTP's at an oal of 1.230". Minimum oal of 1.210" is listed in Hornady's 9th but 1.230" works in all my 45's. I load both Unique and AA#5 for 230 XTP's.
edited to show correct oal. Originally typed 2"

You should start with 4.6grs of Bullseye and load it as long as possible to fit your chamber and mag. That will give you 800 FPS and excellent accuracy.

I've loaded and shot probably 2-3,000 of those bullets...

Unique works great with them....but for high volume loading I use Power Pistol because it meters so much better.

Both of those powders can produce accurate, powerful loads with that bullet.

7 grains of Power Pistol (830 fps is a Glock 36)

6.5 grains of Unique (same velocity as above)

1.23 OAL in any brass...

Safe in my guns.

"I use 6.0-6.3 grains of Unique with 230 XTP's at an oal of 2.230"." I assume you meant 1.230" for this load.

1.205" is as long as I would be comfortable with using the XTP in my SR1911. Hopefully I can get some worked up this afternoon and give them a shot. (pun intended)

Thanks again for the input
Dave,

Luck would have it I have been working in the same area you have. Loading for my SR1911. I wasn't overall pleased with 231/hp-38 in the 45. Mindful that i was shooting a 200gn round nose, I had found that unique produced cleaner burning, and more consistent loads than the 231/hp-38. I'm curious to find out if you experience the same result using 230gn xtps.
