I picked up some 200g and 230g Hornady HP-XTP bullets yesterday. I don't have the Hornady Manual, I have Speer #14 and Lee's 2nd Edition. From searching here and other places I have determined that the OAL should be 1.230. I have these powders Power Pistol, Bullseye, Unique, Universal, Titegroup, AA #7, 2400 and W231 and I am wondering if I use the load data from the Speer Manual for the GDHP would I be OK (Safe) with the HP-XTPs?

Thanks Rick

You will be fine.

The Speer # 13 .45 ACP Gold Dot shows smaller charges than the regular 230 Gr data, which would be fine to use as well. I assume the # 14 is the same way with the GD data.

The factory ones I have measured have been between 1.230 and 1.235. Folks here have called Hornady and they confirm the 1.230 you quoted from the # 7 manual.

He's got that part. He was wondering about using the data in the Speer #14manual (specifically GD data), since it was not specifically for the XTP.

Thanks for the conformation Walkalong. I actually loaded 10 of the 200g ones early this am and headed out to the range. I used 7.0g of Unique and they shot great out of both the Officer's 1911 and the Fullsize 1911. Very accurate and decent recoil. Matter of fact first round was a bullseye I said " That's it I'm done" and put the gun down my shooting buddes started laughing. Another friend told me that the range using Universal is 6.5-7.3 which is slightly higher then the starting/max in the Speer #14 so I think as long as I don't go crazy high on the loading ie. start around mid range using the speer data I should be fine.

Thanks again Walkalong

The XTP is a great bullet, but if you want something cheaper that feeds great and shoots great, you might try the Berrys 200 Gr HP. Punches nice big round holes in paper too.

I actually usually load the bullets from your neck of the the woods Zero brand. I like them alot. I just wanted to try out the XTPs. I use the Zero 380 auto JSPs,9mm RN, 38/357 JHPs, 40 SW FN and the 45acp RN. Got 1000 of the 45acp JHPs on order from them.

Yea, the Zeros shoot great. Unfortunately, I have to pay tax if I get them from Roze.

For what it is worth, I load all my XTPs (185,200, & 230 gr) at an OAL of 1.245" -in fact all of my HP type bullets get that OAL..............it's where my Springer G.I. model likes 'em.

As far as Universal goes - with the 200gr XTPs, I found my most accurate load at the 6.5gr level......consistent 2 inch off-hand groups at 15 yards.

7.0gr Power Pistol, 230gr XTPs, very good defensive load. Shoots little groups out of my Kimber UCII. 816fps out of my 3" shorty.

At 1.23" OAL...with a 230 XTP, 7 grains of Power Pistol is a wonderful load.

Accurate, hard hitting, and not really a "hot" load...chrono's 850 fps from the 4.25 inch barrel of my 1911 and 880 fps from my 5 inch Springfield XD.
