I'm looking at getting a new rifle. Mainly for bench shooting out to possibly 500 yards (if not more) I have narrowed it down to 2 differnet models.

The two guns I'm looking at are the Savage 10 FCP and the Winchester Model 70 Stealth I (not II) in .308

Savage -
24" Heavy fluted barrel
detachable magazine
threaded barrel
1-10 twist

Winchester-
26" Heavy barrel
Bell & Carlson stock
1-12 twist

I can get either of them for about the same price +-$20

However I have actually handled the Winchester, but the savage would be a sight unseen special order.

Anyone have experience with either of these guns that could offer an opinion?

Thanks

Ive never shot a stealth, only the standard m70. Its not my cup of tea, but it seemed like a good solid gun. The Savage on the other hand IS one of my favorite rifles, so its pretty easy to guess what id chose lol. I dont think either would be a BAD choice, but i think the savage is a generaly more accurate rifle, and much easier to bolt on upgrades and make changes....Just my buck fifty

Personally I'd go with the Savage. I'm a HUGE fan of the Mauser bolt. But I love the Accutrigger. I have plans in mind to build a long range rifle starting with a Savage someday when money is not so tight

Savages have a pretty strong reputation for their accuracy, and with good reason. What makes them a great company is that they don't charge and arm and a leg for their rifles, so you get an exceptionally accurate rifle for a very affordable price. The only let-down is that they use crap stocks (except the McMillan models). If you get a Savage, consider investing in a more rigid and capable stock.

i find savage stocks to be as good or better than any other injection molded stock. the accustock is something i havent tried yet. feal maters more to me than stiffness tho, i cant stand most target style stocks.
