I put a Shilen on my 25-06 for a precision varmint rifle. It will stack most any factory 100 grain loads into a group with all shots touching, if not the same hole, at 100 yards. I have used it at 1,000 yards and it works well. Longest prairie dog shot so far was 405 yards, but only took it out one time for p-dogs!

Action is a Remington 700 with Timney trigger worked over by a competent rifle smith, and in a Hogue overmold with the full length aluminum bedding block.

I have an Obermeyer barrel on my deer rifle. It is an excellent barrel. I have an early Mike Rock barrel on my target rifle and IMO there is none better. Of the list I'd go with Krieger.

I’ve used barrels from everyone on the list, save Hart, and plus a handful more.

For my target rifles, or really for most of my rifles, I use Bartlein and Proof Research.

I want it to be 20 inches
threaded
1~8 twist
Matching contour would be great but if I can’t match something close
I want it to be installed by the barrel maker
Douglas will make, fit and duplicate the contours of your previous barrel. And you won't get a better barrel anywhere.

I've used/have Shaw, Shilen and Hart. All three for me are wonderful shooters. I handload for each as well and the once fired brass needs very little sizing I've noticed vs other factory chambers I deal with.

I just got a custom back from McGowen and was more than happy with the barrel and the install. The wait is the hard part but they tell you that up front so no big deal. They have the Savage pre fits you can order as well...

The funny part about it is that most folks with modern CNC equipment can produce a excellent quality product. However you must start with quality barrel steel, and most if not all good barrel makers are very picky about steel. I have most of the barrels listed and those folks build a very good barrel. Most everyone with CNC equipment can duplicate anything, so that is not an issue, many will stick a Savage barrel/action together pretty quick, you just pay the freight. Suggest you call and settle on who makes you feel confortable.

Like Offfhand, I also like Douglas.
They put a 270 Win barrel on my 1903-A3 back in the 80s. Excellent work!!!!!

I've used ER Shaw for the rifles I have done and will be ordering 1 more for that last Mauser action. If you've got a Savage they do a basic install at no charge.

bbl. for what purpose??? Yes, it does make a difference, as why spend big money for a big bbl. makers name, for a hunting gun, when it isn't needed?

I've used a few of the listed bbls., on bench rest rifles, but my hunting guns have Douglas premium bbls., and they are a GREAT bbl. that make a very accurate rifle at a fair price!

My idea exactly! Boots didn’t have time to make my two special purpose barrels at the time I wanted them but gave me great advice getting something else. Since then I’ve been using Kreiger barrels.

Boots Obermeyer started lot in barrel business like Brux,Kreiger,Mike Rock and some others. Head guys at Bartlein worked for Kreiger.

I've got 6 rifle with barrels listed. I also have rifles with Lilja,K&P,Hart,Rock Creek.

Mike used to make barrels for military sniper rifles. I think he teamed up with a guy from Krieger to start Rock Creek Barrels. I don't remember his name tho. He only did single point rifling back in the day. I think Rock Creek does single cut and button rifling now. Mike retired 6 or 7 years ago. Mine was made before Rock Creek.

Bartien, they are accurate their new 400modd barrels have definitely given them and edge with guys that shoot barrel burning cartridges my 280ai is on its 4th bartlien
but they wont fit your criteria because they don't go under 24,inches and they do not chamber or install them
They sell the barrel blank its up to you to find a Smith to do the threading , chamberibg and install work
They also wont do a match contour

I guess I missed that. I withdraw my suggestion. I doubt either of them will make a 20 inch nor will they install them. My custom barrels are 26 inches. I wouldn't want anything shorter.

I have 5 rifles with bartlien barrels on them I've asked frank several times about haveing them chamber and install them and every time he says
The same thing, not a service they offer. They have all they can do just keeping up with making barrels right now.

Well, I voted Lilja.
I've had Hart, McGowan, Shilien and Lilja put on different actions. All have been quite good but the Lilja shoots a smidgen better and actually cleans up easier than the others. I tried to get a Bartlien for this last build but after 2 weeks of trying to get them on the phone to order, I went to the Lilja website and picked the barrel I wanted out of their in-stock items. I had the Lilja in my hands and off to the gunsmith before I even got a call back from Bartlien. Those guys must really be busy!
