I am looking for a good quality, yet inexpensive 9mm to add to my collection. I have narrowed it down to either a ruger P89 or P95. The pistol would spend 90% of its time at the range and only occasionally as a CCW (that is the territory of my P220 or S&W .357 revolver). Any input about pro's and cons of each would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

can only speak for the P89.I have one made in 1994 with countless rounds thru it,you name the brand of ammo,it's been shot thru it.NEVER a failure.not a tack driver but is combat accurate.must say,I don't know if I could CCW this thing.it is a lot of pistol.I know folks who do CCW one,but with my build(full figured) it's hard to "summer time" hide. jwr

I also prefer the P89, like a metal frame better than polymer, and the P89 SA trigger breaks better (for me.)

Note on the P89, they're no longer in production. If you act fast, you can still get one NIB. I guess they don't want too many competing 9mm's going up against the SR9, which is too bad, the P89 is a great gun.

I dont have a problem carrying a big pistol, the s&w .357 I mentioned is a 28-2 4":) I carry it in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake.

I was blessed with an opportunity to shoot a P89 that a range friend had at the range this morning. I think that was the first "non-Teflon Ruger" that I've ever shot. I was amazed at how sweet that gun performed! :D Though I prefer a lighter weight weapon, the P89 would surely not be a bad choice.

I am not in, nor have I ever been, in the military -- but I wish the Army, if they "had to" replace the 1911 (not sure I think that was necessary, but Hey), had gone with something from Ruger. Chunky, tough, decently priced, overengineered -- and (I'd hope) that would make them even cheaper ;)

Both of the ones you name are great -- any reason the SR9 didn't make your cut? I saw a P95 last week brand new for, IIRC, $299 -- good thing I didn't have $299 to hand at the time ;) I'm up to two Rugers at the moment.

i had one of the newer model kp95's. it was reliabel as could be and shot well, i sold it though as i am not a fan of da/sa guns. but i would suggest them to anyone that wants a good 9mm gun. for ccw not so much though. if i was gonna buy a 9mm ruger for range duty and occassional ccw, then i would go with the sr9. it is a better size for carry, thinner, and higher cap.

I had a P95dc a long time ago. Good weapon. Very reliable, and inexpensive. A bit more streamlined than the p89, and slightly smaller. I get the P95 for that reason.

The P89 has been discontinued, so that might factor into your decision.

I have a P89 - I like a solid-feeling gun, that's why I bought it. No problems, ever. Accurate as hell, too. I liked it so much I ended up buying a P90 over a Glock 21 when I got my first .45. Rugers just seem to fit my hand very well - especially with Hogue grips.

I have 6 ruger autos total. One is a P89 and another two are P95s.

I've never had a problem with either of them, I can't pick which I like better.

Newer P95s have a rail and a textured grip on the polymer frame if that matters.

I've had a stainless P89 DC for over 10 years and it's as reliable and accurate as anything I own. I put adjustable sights and Hogue grips on it and it's as good a range gun as anything I've ever tried. Never had FTF/FTEs with any type of ammo and I've shot it quite a bit. Not sleek and pretty but it sure is reliable...
