I am considering a ruger mark iii (i am between that and a histandard, but that discussion is my other thread, this is off topic for that thread so i figured id start a different one for this specific discussion. if you want to join the discussion of histandard vs ruger mark iii, check out my other thread)

ok as far as ruger mark iii's.

they have several models. I want to stay around $300-$350. that means the stainless models are out.

there is a target model with 6 7/8 inch barrell, but then a 20/45 that is supposed to be more like a 1911 style.

is there any difference besides style between the 1911 ruger an the standard? any shooting difference?

there are also the bull barrel models but they arent as long as a barrel. i figure the longer barrel would be more acurate.

also what upgrades should i be looking to do right away? i was thinking the voltquartsen trigger kit.

thanks

mike

i believe that may be out of my price range. that one is closer to $500 right?

So far, I'm happy with my 5.5" 22/45 bull-barrel with target sights. It's as consistant as I am.

The difference between the 22/45 and standard models are just the feel and control location. The frame is polymer and a little thin (-) and the controls are all round nobs (-, IMO) but the angle is the same and the controls are all in the same spots as a 1911(+).

The only complaint I really have (that can't be fixed with a call to Ruger) is that the magazines don't drop free. That's something to consider if you'll be doing speed competitions.

i guess if i get the ruger i will just get the one that fits best. unless someone has a good argument of why the shorter bull barrel is better than the longer regular barrel.

i like the hunter with the hiviz sights, but its too expensive for me i think.

The Mark III is one of the better choices for a general purpose, but accurate, 22 pistol. I have the model with the 5.5" heavy barrel (bull barrel) and would choose that one every time for cost versus use considerations. I believe the cost should be within your budget range, but if not it will be just slightly above it and I would just find the $$ and not change models simply over price.

The target and hunter versions are more expensive. Pick them if you want to.

Whether to go with the 22/45 design version the original design is purely personal preference.

I bought the a Ruger Mark II with the bull barrel to replace everyday use with my Hi Standard Victor. Hi Standard went out of business and I wanted to save my Victor for more important target tasks.

I have a MKIII678 and it works great for me. I didn't see the need to spend considerably more $$ for SS and instead bought upgrades & a red dot scope. Whatever model you get be sure to pay extra and get adjustable sights [Deluxe] since your MKIII will be drilled & tapped for a scope mount and the base is included. Longer barrels will give you a better sight radius for open sights and more downrange energy for hunting, etc. [I would rather have a 10" barrel......]
I would have preferred to have a 22/45 but the MKIII frames [unlike the MKII] are too narrow/thin for my taste and didn't feel like a 1911 grip. The a VQ match trigger & sear will vastly improve your trigger and installing a VQ Exact Edge extractor will take care of random FTE problems.

is it 22 season or something???

Mark III, I love mine. at first I didn't like the way it felt in my hand but now i really like it. I was used to the 1911 and it was just different... but, I have grown to really like it. I have a 5in barrel hunter. Its amazingly accurate.
lately, there has been alot of people looking at 22 pistols.

I suggest you refocus your search toward a used MKII. IMO, the MKII is a much nicer firearm and you should be able to find a very nice specimen without much difficulty.

Arg, don't get a Ruger MKIII---especially the 7" barrel, competition "slab sides" model.

Here are the problems with all MK IIIs:
1. Sprays hot gun powder residue on your hand
2. Easing the slide forward can pinch your fingers (General Ruger design issue)
3. Stupid loaded chamber indicator makes the breach very hard to clean
4. Stupid integrated lock
5. Magazine release is difficult to access with the competition grips
6. Damn near impossible to disassemble and reassemble
7. Stock sights suck big time

Additionally, the 7" barrel, competition model is heavy at 45 oz (plus add your optic) and is very nose heavy, causing wrist fatigue when bullseye shooting for >30 minutes. Also, the grip angle is very extreme, and I find it uncomfortable (YMMV). Finally the trigger, while not bad, is heavier than is acceptable for a "competition" gun.

I highly suggest you just bite the bullet and get the S&W Model 41. The weight is great at 41 oz, it doesn't have all of the lawyer features, the balance is better, the field stripping procedure is mind-blowingly simple, the trigger is great, and the ergonomics are more like a standard 1911/Sig. Plus, you can grasp the slide and walk it forward for storage without pinching your fingers. Also, the stock sights are much better than the Ruger.

Maybe I'm overly critical, but these issues, taken as a whole, really made me sick of my MKIII. Thats why I gladly sold it.

i havent been able to find a mark ii used around here. i dont want to do a $100 ffl transfer from an online sale(both sides charge)

the hunter is NICE but i think my local store has it for $469, or maybe it was $569, it was atleast $469. i am able to spend $399 max right now. the price of the hi standard which i am now leaning towards.

Since when? Go on Gunsamerica, Gunbroker or other sites classified sections (THR, TFL, etc). Look for the best deal then have him ship to your FFL of choice. My local FFL charges me $15 for transfers.

Get a MK II.

in nj all ffl's are minimum $35. usually more, and usualy the other side is more/same.

I don't understand what you mean by "the other side". You only need to pay a transfer fee once as an FFL can ship to another FFL without doing a transfer on his end. Do you mean shipping?

ok i went to pa to a gun store there, i looked at a gun i liked. i said what if i want to buy this? they said, we charge $35 ffl transfer fee. then the gun store in nj that is doing the ffl transfer will charge you there rate ($35)

thats where i am getting that from..... (+ shipping, yes)

MkIII

I bought the MkIII and love it. I would say try the 5.5" thats what I use. I shoot it for Bianchi once in a while and holds pretty good. I also shoot bowling Pins.

thanks for the site. his prices are good, hunter is $450. my store - $515. BUT

with FFL costing $35 at all local shops, $485 to $515 not huge savings for a) pissing off my local dealer b) waiting c) dealing with shipping (possible losses, delays, etc)

BUT i may be able to find other guns there with a bigger savings so thanks alot for the site. (plus i can see how descent my stores prices really are)

Did you figure in sales taxes ? You should save those at Bud's. It's the out the door [total] cost that matters. If you need to buy local you certainly have to pay the price.

wow, i diyep, i didnt do sales tax. the discount is way more worth it when i figure in sales tax. interesting though, it only saves my friend $20 to go from buds taking sales tax and everything into consideration. for the ruger its more like $70.

i am thinking of getting the ruger target model that is blued and has a bull barrel.

also for $120 more, there is the stainless gun with the longer 6 inch barrel with the flattened sides. it comes with a real nice wood grip.

so between those two rugers, can anyone give me any ideas on if its worth the extra money?

i am going today to pick one of these 2 guns. anyone have any info on the flattened side 6 7/8 barrel stainless version?

OUCH!

I'm looking to buy one too, and when I do, I'm pretty sure Bud's Gun Shop will beat all the local stores. That's why I've bought my last two guns from them. A local gunsmith does the transfer to me for $10 so it beats all the competition by miles! I don't understand the "both sides" comment either. If I had your budget ($399 max), I'd but the gun from the link below, but then again my transfer fee is only $10.

Check out this one from Bud's
