Which Ruger Mark III to get?

ok i went to pa to a gun store there, i looked at a gun i liked. i said what if i want to buy this? they said, we charge $35 ffl transfer fee. then the gun store in nj that is doing the ffl transfer will charge you there rate ($35)

The PA gun store is ripping you off. There is no need to do a transfer from one FFL to another. The only time they have to do a transfer is when the sell it to you in NJ.

Buy from somewhere else on line like Bud's.

lol, actually i was wrong, it is MORE.

to buy from buds, my local gun store(s) (they must be in league) costs $67!

$50 for the ffl transfer and $17 for the nics. (or maybe it was 65 or 66, i forget the exact amount for the nics)

but more important, what about the flattened side 6 7/8 ruger competition target with the nice wood grips vs the bull barrel for $120 less? i am buying today one way or another, i have waited long enough :)

it was worth shopping around on ffl. i found one that is $35 including NICS.

so now that i know where to ship to. i just need to decide which model to order.

i am between the bull barrel 5.5in, hunter stainless, slab side 6 7/8 competition.

all reg. mark iii (i dont like the 22/45)

i am between the bull barrel 5.5in, hunter stainless, slab side 6 7/8 competition.

I have a 5.5 inch bull barrel MK II. Several people I know think the 6 7/8 is too long and just too heavy. The 5.5 is better balanced. Have you held both?

ok i have decided on the 5.5 inch bull barrel, it was nicely balanced. i was going to buy it from my local gun store today cause i thought their price was $340, not too bad over $311 on buds. but then i realized it was $360. Then the nics is $17 and with the tax is $403. buds is $311 + $35 is $346. basically a $60 discount by going with buds.

but i am a little worried about going with an online dealer. what is the deal with their "shipped" prices? is this like take forever to get out of the wharehouse and ship to you or you get it fast?

i want to make sure its worth the $60 savings. besides having to wait that is.

I finally got a 22LR!!

I ended up buying the Ruger Mark III 5.5 Inch Bull Barrel Target Model - in Blue. I bought it from my local gun shop. It ended up costing me $35 more than Bud's, but bud's had an issue with using my visa gift cards that i was using. Plus I wanted to support my local gun store because they are the very last retail gun store in my area. The only other one that was 45 minutes away is going out of business. Plus they spent alot of time with me showing me different guns. I felt it was the best decision.

Thanks to all of those who helped. Thanks for the info on buds. I will most likely use Buds in the future when i am in less of a rush.

I went to the range and fired the gun tonight. Its fantasic, i am really happy with it overall. The weight an feel are great. It shot pretty good groups, all about 5 inches left of center. So i need to adjust my sights, they are clearly off. I didnt at the range because I wanted to make sure i read the manual and did it right.

Is there anything i should know about adjusting the sight? If the gun is shooting 6 inches to the left, what way would i adjust it? I assume i would adjust the screw on the right side of the sight and turn it clockwise?

I am also considering which upgrades to do. My plan was this:

1st) Voltquartsen Thumbrest RH Volthane Grips
2nd) Voltquartsen Accurizing Kit
3rd) A Red Dot or Holographic Sight
4th) ???

Any other suggestions/thoughts on upgrades?

Also, where can i read up on the difference between red dot and holographic sights?

Excellent!!! You will love it! Get a Volquartsen hammer, sear and trigger installed. Wait on the red dot or holo site for a while and get it dialed in with the stock sites.

I might as well get the accurizing kit right? I think it comes with all that plus more.

I will hold off on the red dot. i want to make sure i get something descent.

I am wanting hi-viz sights cause of my bad eye sight though. any experience with adding them to the ruger mark iii?

Also anyone have experience with the voltquartsen volthane target grips for the mark iii? they are $60, i want to make sure they are worth it.

Quick question. i was reading the manual and it mentioned its safe to dry fire this gun with the bolt pin or some kind of pin in place. they say if its not in place dry firing it will destory the gun which i have heard, i do it on my ruger 10/22 all the time when i miscount rounds.

what about this ruger mark iii? is it really safe to dry fire?

also is it bad to leave a gun (especially the mark iii) cocked? when you are done shooting, you close the bolt, cocking the gun. you either need to put it away cocked (which i am told at the gun store is A OK but sounds bad to me) or dry fire it.

I believe it is safe to dry fire the MK III, but snap caps are cheap, so I keep one in all my MK II's and always pull the trigger on the snap cap (pointed in a safe direction) to decock it. I don't think it hurts to keep it cocked though.

Shoot it stock for a while, then have some of the trigger/sear mods installed.
