OK, I'm mostly a revolver guy but I do own a few semi-autos. One of them is a 5" Springfield 1911A1 GI in Blue. I like the 1911 and I like the Springfield but I'm looking for a change, enter the Ruger SR1911...

I have shot a 5" Ruger 1911 and I was impressed with the pistol and the trigger. It's a well made gun and you get a lot of pistol for the money IMO. My only problem is, should I buy the 5" full size model, the Commander length model or the NEW Commander length Aluminum frame model?

PLEASE, only give opinions on which RUGER 1911 to buy, the 5", the 4.25" or the lite 4.25" 1911. Thank you...

I have the commander size and I like it I really like the heft of the all steel frame it is a sweet shooter

I bought the stainless commander length. I love the thing! Great shooter, 100% reliable. The gun is well executed and closely fitted. Attention to detail seems really good for the price level. No complaints whatsoever.

Go with the stainless Commander length gun. I have always liked the handling and balance of the Colt's Combat Commander over that of their Government Model.

The stainless Commander length. Been looking at them myself.

You've got a 5" 1911, you know what they're like. I find them a bit much for carry as well as a little muzzle heavy.

The 4.25" stainless will balance better and be easier to carry should you ever go that way.

The 4.25" aluminum frame
1) is too new; give Ruger time to see if they've got the process right
2) is too light; will deliver more punishment during range sessions
3) might have balance issues due to the lighter frame (never shot one)
4) is less durable if high round counts are anticipated
5) is to be considered only if carrying is a top priority (I assume it isn't)

WHOA!!!! When did an aluminum framed CMD come out from Ruger?
This is the first time I've heard of it.

"Lord, please grant me the willpower not to run out and buy it. Please grant me the will power not to run out and buy it. Please....." oh heck... who am I kidding?

The answer is pretty self explanatory. What is the purpose of this gun? If simply a range gun, the 5" steel model. If a combo, go with the CMD, and depending on how much you plan to carry it, the 10oz lighter AL frame would likely be much more pleasant to carry all day.

I can't really vote in the poll until I know what you plan to do with the gun.

If I were to buy right now I would get the all steel CMD. I like the looks of the new lightweight version (I'm a sucker for a 2 tone gun) but I don't know how it would balance & I would expect there to be the new product feeding frenzy (I would expect it to be more expensive & harder to find). I already have a 5" SR 1911 & like it so I would look at the all steel CMD.

Would buy and did buy the 4.25 stainless.

5" stainless is next.

These things are beautiful guns and I've shot a number of them and they shoot a lot better and are fit and finished a lot better than the price might suggest.

I have the 4.25" Stainless one. I say go with that.

I shoot the "Commander" length 1911 every bit as good as the 5" "Government" size, and they carry much, much easier (if that's a possibility).

Also, I much prefer the heavier steel frame on 1911s since they tame recoil far, far better (in my opinion) to the point I sold all my aluminum framed 1911's.

I have both the full size and the commander but if the pistol is for carry the commander in all stainless steel is the way to go.
Second choice full size last would be the alloy frame version. I'd wait on the alloy frame for some reviews and the type of aluminum alloy that's for the frame.

Thanks everyone. This gun is just something I want but I don't know why. Like I said, I'm a revolver gut mostly but I do own and shoot a 5" Government 1911 and even carry it sometimes so this gun might be carried but I don't expect it top be my everyday carry.

I wish I had a chance to shoot the lighter 1911 before I buy but I have no way to do that. I'm fairly sure the Commander length is a go, the only question left is how heavy...

Buy a Dillion!:D

Do you have a range you can test fire any of them? I have a full sized one and it is a very good gun for the money.

At the time I bought it they did not have the other options. I like Commander sized 1911's but if the gun is for range target shooting the full size is my choice,

Only you can decide Grasshopper.

No, no place anywhere near me to try out guns and no one I know has a alloy 1911 to shoot. It will probably be mostly for range fun but like I said, I have a 5" 1911 already.

OH MY, I'm so confused!!! :banghead:

Since you neglected to say if the 1911 has a particular purpose, I am going to assume it is going to be in the "just to have" category. If this is true, the 5" would be the one to get.

I have a Ruger 5" just for a range toy.
I LOVE it! Gun shoots better than I do by far.
Feels great on weight and balance (to me)
I Probly wouldn't carry it. Heavy and low capacity.
But it's well worth the money. A great 1911 that
You don't worry about as much as a colt or Springfield.

Well if you have a full sized 1911 then the answer is the Commander. As You shave some weight with the alloy or aluminum then there ya go.

All in favor say AYE!

Motion passed, go buy it!!

And to further complicate things, they also make an all-black model with Novak night sights called the Night Watchman in 5 and 4.25". Here is mine, grips not included.
