Which Savage Axis model?

Looking into buying a Savage .223, the Axis in particular. I was just wondering what their best model is, under 450.

I'm not sure why they make the Axis if they already make a rifle in the same price range, the Stevens 200. I think that the 200 is a nicer rifle for about the same amount of money.

The Axis has a detachable box mag. That is the major difference. That and the Axis is available in left hand models this year.

What do you guys honestly think of the Axis? I'm tempted to pick up one in .223 for a cheap coyote hunter. My choices are either that or scoping my AR-15 A2, on top of the carrying handle.

I'm actually going to buy an Axis in .223 tomorrow for target shooting and hunting coyotes. I've only heard good things about them. $329 with a Bushnell 3-9 on it. Can't beat the price.

That is what has me really thinking about one too. Either I can get a decent bolt action for cheap, that I won't be afraid to scratch, or, I can toss a scope on my A2 carry handle and have an awkward cheek weld.

For right under $400 from Walmart you can get the Savage Model 10 or 110 with the accu trigger, and a cheap scope. IMO this is a much better buy than the Axis/Edge. That's not to say the Axis/Edge is a bad gun because it's not, I just don't think it's up to par with the others and it's not that much cheaper.

At around $300 the Axis is a great deal. It's probably the best of the low end bolt guns, but it does have it's limitations. The gun is designed for people who are only going to hunt a few times a year or take it to the range for casual shooting. While the 10/110 models are only $50 more, to many people that is a deal breaker. If you are a tinkerer it's not the gun for you. For example, the recoil lug is embeded in the stock which is the opposite of the other Savages so you cannot replace the stock with current aftermarket stocks.

if you want tp play with and be a casual shooter the axis is for you. if you want something to upgrade and hand down later go with the stevens... or ony up the extra and get the wally 10/110 special. both better guns in my opnion...

Every time someone mentions the Axis/Edge, another person or two chimes in and says, "Why not just buy the Steves?", or "Why not just buy the 110?".
I have two Edges along with a bunch of other rifles. They are cheap, durable and accurate. They most certainly will be handed down to my children or grandchildren along with my other guns.

The .223 makes an excellent predator rifle and is fun to shoot. My only complaint is that the magazine is particular in being seated and will not feed well if put in wrong.

I really like mine, It seems to be a real top notch rifle. It doesn't have the Accu-Trigger, but in all honesty I really like the trigger on mine. Has a really crisp trigger, and is much lighter than what I'm used to, the trigger that is.
The rifle itself is MUCH lighter than what I'm used to.

I intend it to be the nemisis of the coyotes in my area here in the next couple weeks

I had a Savage Edge in 223.Shot it alot and was a MOA rifle.If you want a no frills rifle that will work the Axis will fit the bill.I hated the stock made it feel like an airsoft rifle.The long action of the bolt was kinda awkward feeling but fuctioned perfect.I ended up selling it and getting a use Remington 700 wood stock.Huge difference in feel but about the same accuracy.
