I'm getting a CZ 527 Varmint Target in .223 for paper punching (100-200 yds) and for getting started in coyote hunting (200 yds or less, expected). I'd like a good scope, but since I've always shot pistols, I don't know much about scopes or the new red dot rifle scopes. My budget is around $500, and I'm assuming I need a variable magnification scope (3-9 or 6-20?), but again, I'm pretty ignorant on the subject. Any help appreciated!

Most hunting scopes tend to be at the lower end of the magnification scale, as game animals don't tend to stay still for very long. On the other side of the spectrum are certain varmints(prairie dogs, ground hogs) that do have tendencies to stay put a bit longer, and are often shot at longer ranges with higher magnification. For coyotes I find 6x is about the top for me, but for paper I like a bit more magnification.

I really like the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 for coyotes, and its what i use. Good lenses, not too expensive, and gives me the range adjustment I need.

Google the Mueller 4.5 to 14 X 40 APV AO. I think you will find pretty favorable reviews and about $130 when not on sale.
Best, Dave
