Today I bought a new Savage Trophy Hunter XP in 308. It came with a Nikon Prostaff BDC 3-9X40. In the safe I have a Nikon Prostaff 5 2.5-10X40 & a older Leupold VX-II 3-9X40. The Prostaff 5 was intended to go on my varminter AR. I had thought about putting the Leupold on my Marlin 336 30-30. Now I'm thinking about putting the 3-9 from the Savage onto the AR & the Prostaff 5 or the Leupold on the .308 and whatever is left on the Marlin. Or not. What says you all?

I think any of them are too much scope for the 30-30. Something like a 1-4X20 is about right for it. But of your options I'd use the Leupold on it as you originally planned. It is the smaller lighter scope.

I'd stay with the original plan all around if in your shoes.

Or I'll just leave the 30-30 with the irons. And maybe just put on a peep sight.

IMO the ProStaff 5 scopes are much better than the original ProStaff scopes. They are a new line and come with new tech inside the tube and a 4:1 zoom ratio instead of a 3:1 like on the original ProStaff.

I would go with the ProStaff 5 but you can't go wrong with the Leupold scope either. I agree all 3 are way too much magnification for a 30-30. I have a fixed 4X32 scope on my 30-30.
