I am looking at getting a new scope for my marlin xs7 .308 I currently have a Nikon Prostaff BDC 3-9x40 on it right now that I plan on putting on my Ruger 10/22. I was thinking about getting either a burris fullfield II or a nikon buckmaster to put on the xs7 as an upgrade until I saw that the new prostaffs have 98% light transmission. I know that light transmission isn't the only deciding factor for a scope, I just want to know which of these has the best optical quality for the money

A $110 prostaff has 98% light transmission. And a $600 monarch gold has 95%. Sure, that could happen.
Still, the new prostaff should be improved from the old one. And the buckmaster is a nice scope. Burris has lowered some of their prices lately.
I'd probably go with the Burris.

I have a FFII that I just swapped out. Overall I really liked the FFII. The scope was very pleasing to look through, nice and clear and it held zero on my Savage 308 for 2 years and a couple hundred shots. Mine had the BDC reticle in it which wasn't my first choice but that's all they had when I bought my gun. For my type of shooting (primarily deer hunting in the woods) I like a thick duplex. I think for that price point, you'd be very happy with the Burris. Look around for some package deals too. The scope was $199, and for $219.99 they (Cabelas) had a deal where you got a free (well, it cost me $20) 3-9x40 rimfire scope. I snagged that up, and I'm very impressed with the el cheapo scope on my .22lr.

cabelas has the bushnell elite 4200 3-9x40 on clearance for $179. would this be a better choice?

I've never personally looked through one but all the reviews I've heard about it were very good. Check the Cabelas website, and see what the reviews on that scope say. Check some other sources too, like Optics Planet and Midway USA and see what the reviews on those sites say as well. I'm sure someone else can chime in with some pro's/con's on that scope from here as well.

Yes. The 4200 is a better choice.
IMO, best deal right now is the Nitrex TR1 at Natchezss.
Next best deal is the 4200 at Cabela's.

are the optics in the bushnell much better than in the fullfield II. I have never looked through an elite 4200 but I have a burris pistol scope on my remington xp100 and it is a very nice scope

Bushnell Elite 4200 and Nitrex were made in Japan, likely in the same building. The Burris and the Buckmaster are made in the Philippines.
Three years ago, the 4200 and the Nitrex 3-9's sold for $300. The FFII and the Buckmaster sold for $200.

Now, you can get the Nitrex for $140. The 4200 goes for $180 and they throw in a raincoat. The Burris is $170, which includes a GPS. The Buckmaster is $210 and they give you a camera.
Best optically should be the 4200 and the Nitrex.

my problem with the nitrex is that I have never heard of them and I don't know anyone who uses one. I have a burris and a nikon and I have a friend that uses nothing but bushnell elite. I know that nitrex is made by weaver, but if it is that good of a scope, why wouldn't weaver just put their own name on the thing.

I recently got a 4.5-14x40SF for my old Remington 700 ADL in 30-06. Personally, I like it better that the ProStaff or the Burris Fullfield models, I think the Buckmasters Series has glass nearly as good as the Monarchs.

I think i am going to go with the bushnell. Do any of you have any recommendations on what rings I should use? the marlin has a weaver style rail mounted on it right now. I am looking at the burris zee and the burris extreme tactical.

I have a nitrex tr1. 6-20x50. nice glass, but the eye box is rather unforgiving. I talked to weaver about nitrex. they said the tr1's are grand slams, weaver warranties nitrex, and that they would be replaced with grand slams if there was a problem.

Either the Burris Zee rings or the XTRs will work fine. Be aware that the XTR lows are as high as the Zee mediums.
