I am looking at getting a HD shotgun and will likely get a pump, however there are some very nice looking tactical semi autos out there. In particular I have looked at a Rem 1100 and 1187. How do those two compare and are there any others you would suggest and why?
It would also be handy to have one of these with a second barrel that could be used for upland game, which I am getting into as of late. So any merits for HD and field use would be much appreciated.
By the way, I would love an FN or an M1, but the $1000+ price tag is too rich for my blood.

If you can afford one of those Remingtons, you should be well served. The 1100-TAC that stays in my master bedroom has been as flawless as it gets. I certainly shoot it more than all my other shotguns combined.

But I would then suggest an entirely separate field gun, although I know that swapping barrels is both inexpensive and effective. I just like having separate guns for separate rolls.

Saiga 12.
The prices are coming down and they have tons of stuff available. Or just leave it as is....Russ

I have an 1100 and it serves double duty. HD to trap with just a barrel swap away!

I have two Rem 1100's from the 1960's which have had tyens of thousands of rounds through them without any problems. One is a skeet gun the other a trap gun. In all those years I have replaced the metal gas ring assembly on one and another minor part (forget which) on the second one. They are the fiearm equivalent of the Timex watch-takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Don't you know by now you simply can't defend your home with a 26" or 28" vint-rib barrel!

How do I know this fact.
Every HD shotgun thread on the internet says so before it runs it's course..

I don't know. I think I've heard good and bad about every gun out there.

CZ even has a model '712 Utility' shotgun. I never could find a whit's worth of reviews on the net, but now there are several. All quite positive for the price. It's one of the least expensive auto loaders I've ever considered.

I have had several brands. The Remingtons tend to be little heavy but very soft recoil and they keep making them, meaning you can get parts, barrels and aftermarket support and trade or sell it in the future. For that reason I bought a used 11-87 with a slug and field barrel. I have a Franchi and a Beretta that I like but couldn't find slug barrels. I've got two other imported brands that are now orphans. I was looking at a Mossberg but they didn't have any in stock and I found the 11-87. I've heard good things about the Mossberg 930 and 935.

An 1100 would work fine, but it is a heavy gun, and they require more frequent maintenance than the newer designs. IMO the Mossberg 930 is your best bang for the buck in an autoloading shotgun. They will digest just about any load out there, and are available in several defense packages to suit your needs.

Barrel swap? You guys never heard of choke tubes? My 1100 serves me from deer to skeet.

Neither barrel is threaded for chokes and the 21" barrel doesn't function with birdshot. It also has rifle sights and a cylinder bore so a barrel swap is necessary.
