Which semi's close after inserting fresh magazine?

I would love to see the weapon that one could count on releasing the slide every time a mag was inserted. Then I would ask if it would also happen if the worn parts were replaced;)

The two that come to mind are the P7 and the Remington 51 (WAY advanced for its time). Both have to be squeezed (P7 on the front, Rem 61 on the rear grip safety), but they are already in your hand, so its almost instantaneous.

the problem is one of balance.

If you make the slide stop relatively easy to work as a slide release, the jolt from sending a magazine home is enough to jar the slide stop out of the notch.

If the notch is undercut enough to prevent this from happening, the slide stop becomes difficult to use as a release.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the current service pistols were desingeed to close on magazine insertion, but most of them will it you smack the magazine in hard enough.

On my friend's new M&P 45, if the slide is back it will automatically slide forward and load the first round of a newly inserted mag. We assumed this was an intended feature as it has a thumb safety. I think it is a great time saver from having to press the slide release, after inserting a new mag.

Well, my new (less than 100 rounds fired) Sig Blackwater tactical closes when inserting a loaded mag quick and firm. Does not happen when an empty mag is inserted or if a loaded mag is inserted very slow and easy. I contacted Sig and according to their pistol smiths this is normal.

I kinda like it, saves me an extra step (releasing the slide lock) I mean what would you do after inserting a loaded mag?

you cant be a real operator if your gun dosent chamber when you insert a mag, attention everyone, you must sell all your guns and buy H and K's if you wish to survive

My FNP 45 has done it since it was new, so I'm not worried about it. My PPK just started doing it on the last trip to the range with well over 2000 previous rounds of not doing it, I find that worrisome.

It's just not good to have your pistol doing things you didn't tell it to.
Agreed. If it did it reliably with any insertion, that would be great ... but imagine the potential problem caused by expecting the slide to go forward, but having it fail in a high-stakes reload. Eyes should be on the threat and the front sight, not having to check on the status of the slide, and the "feel" may be missed in a high-stress situation.

My Glock 19 does it. I wish it didn't - the pistol has less than a thousand rounds through it.

As a note, I tend not to use the slide release at all - since my P64 does not have an external release for the slide catch, I think it's better to release the slide by hand every time, to build habit and reflex.

I've never had my USP close when I put a magazine in. Maybe I'm just not angry enough when I insert it...

My CZ97 does it if the magazine is inserted forcefully and has since it was new. I don't know if it was an intended feature but I know I like it and consider it an improvement in function, not a malfunction.

Had it happen with an STI gp6 and a daewo on the same range session. Not every time, but frequently. I do not slam the magazines into the well.
