So as my christmas present to myself I've come down to three different rifles. Choices are roughly in order of price:

Enfield 2A .308, roughly $200 or so after shipping and FFL.

M1 Garand w/ Dutch barrel, about $615 after tax (local sale). Nice bore, good condition, and from a local shop.

Polytech M1A brand new, about $900 after tax.

The M1A is a bit pricey, but not unaffordable. I've always wanted a M1A/M14 and it seems like a nice rifle for a good price compared to a Springfield etc.

The Garand is of course a Garand. Always wanted one, good oportunity to own one of know quality vintage etc.

Enfield, a nice variation on the SMLE I've been wanting for a while. Being in .308 is a nice advantage as well since that's cheaper to buy then .303 (since I don't reload at the moment).

Main usage is going to be marksmanship work. I don't hunt. I plan on getting into high power shooting once I get more proficent at offhand shooting.

Just curious what other peoples opinions are on the issue. I'm halfway convinced I should go with the Enfield and the Garand and get the M1A later.

Personally, I think you have reached the right choice in the last paragraph. That particular M1A is overpriced I believe while the others are more in line with reasonable. You WILL enjoy those, especially the M1!

Garand...the M1A isn't going anywhere and it seems every time I check the CMP, stocks are getting smaller and smaller!

Gonna go with the Garand and the enfield. FFL in the mail for the enfield this afternoon, and I'll get the Garand on friday. Boy the wife is gonna be made :)
