i have three guns that i've been thinking about using as a truck gun. which would you use? the ak, perhaps after adding a folding stock, the mini 14 with folding stock or the 11 1/2" barreled ar pistol?

My AK fits nicely behind the seat.......

besides, it scares the sheeple neighbors when I pull it out to take in the house.......chris3

The AK would be my choice of those, keeping the mag stowed in some different area to prevent a car thief from grabbing it and going to town on you. I usually prefer a bolt action rifle such as a Mosin or Mauser because you can just remove the bolt and render it totally useless to a thief.

Depends on the use it's going to get. I just have a .22 in my truck, but if you need more, I'd consider the cost. It's more likely to be stolen, so cheaper is better.

I'd add +1 to Cosmoline and go with a short Mosin, either M-44 or M-38. They definitely have enough power for just about anything. Will you need semi-auto? If so, I'd suggest the AK since you don't have to clean it.

Well, I still think an SKS is the ultimate truck gun...Cheap, easily replaced, and cheap ammo. But, of your choices I'd go with the Mini-14 as they're generally such pieces of junk, i wouldn't mind losing it:evil:

I alternate between my SKS and M44 Nagant. I like the Nagant because I can just pull the bolt and throw it in my bag when I leave the car.

If you are basing your decision on what you wouldn't mind losing, you might as well base it on what you wouldn't mind the guy shooting at you with when you catch him going through your car or what you wouldn't mind the guy kicking in your door with after he finds your truck gun and decides to see what is in the house.

Figure out what it will cost to secure the rifle in your truck first and that will give you a budget for a truck gun. Another alternative is to get a discreet case and remove the rifle when you leave the vehicle. Considering some of the nice options out there, this isn't all that unpractical in many situations.

For hunting trucks, I think a Marlin 1895GS would be handy... though if you don't have the budget I imagine a shotgun with slugs would do well enough :D

What do you anticipate using it for, should you pull it out of your truck?

That's the starting point.

Oh, and it's pretty easy to disable a Mini-14 as well. Just remove the trigger group. It pops back in without tools.

When I leave a gun in my truck, I have it in the case and secured to the seat frame with a 3/8" diameter steel cable and a good Master lock. If someone wanted the gun, they'd have to take the seat off to get it, or cut through the case (the latter being easier, and still going to take a while). You can get the entire setup for security at Wally's or any hardware store, around $15 with tax.

Get a bullpup stock

You can get this stock kit for < $129. You end up with a cool loking very short Mini 14. Perfect for wheeling around inside a truck and cheaper than buying a new gun.

and you can play Starship Troopers with the rest of us...

The ultimate truck gun out west is a 30-30 lever action. More power than any of those rifles listed.

I have a beautiful Yugo SKS that rides in the trunk of my car. In the winter months I cant bear to leave it in there, I know its only a $150 rifle at best but I just cant do it.

I take it out and toss a M44 in its place - I actually got paid $20 to take a pair of these Mosins last year and this one is the one thats in worse shape out of the two.

This year I may replace the SKS with my cheapy WASR - I bought 2 "better" AKs recently and the thought if this one getting stolen along with my car doesnt bother me near as much as it used to.

Being that it's for a vehicle, it must handle whatever you encounter in a vehicle.

Absolutely an SKS. Why?

  • Keeping firearms in vehicles is a bad idea, they are begging to be stolen. SKS is cheap, and easily replaceable.
  • It is a reliable, battle tested weapon.
  • If you are stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere, the SKS provides plenty of protection from dangerous animals such as wolves, dogs, bears etc...
  • In defensive scenario against humans, like a riot where you are trapped, or some crazed gunman is going berserk and needs to be put down, you need the power to down the aggressors quickly. A rifle is always better than a pistol, and an SKS will be far more accurate being a long arm. You'll be able to engage targets out to 150 yards. If they are further than that, you should consider evasion.
  • It offers enough penetration power to defeat the vast majority of concealment barriers found in society. Such as, car doors, cinderblock walls, thin trees, garbage cans, fences etc...
  • It is robust enough that in the event you run out of ammo, and you are faced with close quarters combat, the rifle makes for an excellent clubbing weapon, or if you have the bayonet extended...well, you know.
  • All for the low price of $99.99

If money is no object, then put anything in there. Preferably an AK-47 with two 30-round mags taped together. Rack the charging handle and go to work on the scumbags with a total of 60 rounds of firepower. More IS better. But 10 rounds, or 20 with the extended magazine, in an SKS should be enough to deter 99% of anyone interested in messing with you.

After all, how many times have you seen people run towards gun fire?

okay, i should probably have added that i'm not completely settled on the idea of keeping a rifle in the truck but if i do, it would probably be one of those three i mentioned. my problem is that i would have to store it in the folded up rear seat of my f-150 (there is no behind the seat). it is, of course, unlikely i'd need the rifle for anything but i figure if you need a gun, well, a rifle is better and if you need a rifle, you need it NOW. i've thought about getting a tool box and i'm sure i will eventually but i don't know how useful it would be to keep a weapon in there since it would likely take a while to get it. just kickin' around the idea and i appreciate the input. dunno, i'll probably end up deciding it's not worth having the gun stolen.

Zombies, man. Zombies.
You've got to plan your trunk gun with zombie invasions in mind...
If video games have taught me anything...you need a gun that shoots large wooden spikes...or a VP-70.

When considering security, I like the cheap bolt gun since you can secure the bolt separately. However, an AK or SKS might work if you can secure the ammo separately. Pretty easy to slap in a stripper clip in if you need it.

Which truck gun ?

I agree that keeping a gun in a truck is not a good ideal. But I guess it really depends on where you live! I would hate to think that I suppied a criminal with a killing tool. And if he or she get's it from the truck in your driveway, and it's a loaded SKS , and they now feel surcure enough to brake into your house. You and your family have a real problem. But that said, you mite look a Kal-Tec 9mm or 40, no trouble than taking your lunch box in aftrer work.

Mosin Nagant M38. You should be able to get one for $80. Low maintenance and you won't worry about the loss if something happens to it. And if you shoot it and miss, the resounding blast will scare anything away within earshot.

keltec makes a brand new su16 pistol that is the bees knees , i just saw one at the last gun show, it is awesome, it uses the short stole gas piston , instead of direct blowback, so no buffer tube sticking out the back at all.

Got 2, one for each truck

Hi Y'all,

We got 2. My truck has an old beater, a Mod 94, 30/30.
Got $120 & a Case pocket knife in it.

DSW has a old beat-up single barrel 20 ga. behind her seat,
and a few #4 birdshot & #4 buck.

Whatever you think you need, I guess.
We're not too worried, in Indiana, about a big mob of
zombies(they move real slow anyway), or a handful of terrorists,
either. Mostly find those out West.
Ion't know, Oklahoma, or Utah, or somewhere like that.
Have Fun.

well, haveing one stolen out of my truck already. i am currently jsut useing my marlin 336 in 30/30. but a cheap marlin model 60 works nice to. It is easy to carry 300 rounds of ammo and all at a price as low as 50 dollars.
But one suggestion be sure to write down the serial numbers of what ever gun you put in your truck.
