So within the next month or two I am going to be picking up a nice shiny new Springfield Armory XD. After much handling and looking over the gun store cases I have decided on one. But I am left with a question yet as to what caliber.

9mm is a good round and the cheapest, but I would prefer something with a bit more gusto. 40S&W seems a good all around caliber. It isn't terribly expensive but is more so then the 9mm, also has the better stopping power I like since it will be used multi role for mostly range as if ever needed H/PD. Then the new .45 auto XD's. Best stopping power of the three but for range work is also the most expensive.

The range does their own reloads so none are overly expensive but a good bit of ammo and shooting does add up. 7.99 for 9mm, 8.99 for 40, and 10.99 for 45 per box of 50 is what the ranges reloads go for.

I am thinking of heading in the middle with the 40S&W caliber model for its good mix of economy and stopping power when compared to the other two. Any thoughts or suggestions?
 
I am looking into other ammo sources, but those are what I will end up using at least on occasion. 40S&W seems like a good inbeteen round with a good mix of features.
 
You should be able to find factory 9mm FMJ for $4-6 a box of 50. My XD9 really likes the cheap CCI Aluminum Blazer and for $3.86/50 at my local Academy, I really like it too!

I don't see much difference in price between the cheapest .40S&W and .45ACP factory ammo, both run close to 2X the cost of 9mm ball. IMHO you are asking for trouble to shoot reloads in .40S&W unless you do them yourself as the margin for error in rather small in this caliber. Also not a caliber for newbie reloaders to start with either as far as I'm concerned.

If its mostly to be used at the range, you'll do a lot more shooting with the 9mm.

I agree those prices you listed for range reloads are not very good, but I'd sure like to know where Lupinus is getting 100 rounds of UMC for ~$12! I never walk past .40 or .45ACP factory ammo if its less tha $8/50. Steel case Wolf, (up to about $143/1000, was ~$120/1000 a few months ago) is the cheapest I can find, $170-180/1000 is pretty good for factory ball these days. Reloading components for .40 or .45 run about $70/1000 not counting the brass and how much you spend on equipment to get started and you are shooting cast lead, not jacketed bullets at these prices.

But I'm strictly .40, .45 or .357mag for carry guns unless I'm forced to go with my P3AT as a last resort.

I recently landed a .45ACP XD from Springfield Armory, with the
GEAR package. IMHO, one fine weapon~!:D

BTW, your range reloads are priced way tooooooo high~!:uhoh: I sell new
Rem-UMC, Fiocchi, and MagTech for those kind'a prices~!:cool:

I'm gonna be looking around at some other shops. I have talked to some people in my area and they all have said the place is a little pricy. He is charging 539 new, going to try and see if I can't find them new at a bit lower price.
 
i have a service model in .40 and the only thing i wish was that I could shoot it for as cheap as the 9mm. but your right it is in between, more stopping power, but I like to shoot and shoot alot so economy shooting is a big thing for me. i carry my xd and practice and stay up on my skills with it, but since 9mm is cheaper i end up shooting more of it, in the other pistols i have! But no and I mean no plinking goes on with my handguns, when i take a pistol to the range it is all business, from start to finish!

That is way high IMO, unless it has trijicon sights even then its still high.

Everything I've read about XD's goes right with what xd9fan said "You cant go wrong with one." I'm looking at getting a 45ACP for myself. I would however stay away from a 45GAP they say their even more expensive to feed then a 45ACP.
 
Go for the 9mm. Yeah the .40cal is bigger but you know what? I don't wanna get shot with either. And plenty of people are just as dead after being shot with 9mm than with .40.

+1 to stay away from the one in .45GAP. I got to compare the .45GAP and .45ACP XDs side by side along with the XD9 I bought at last month's gun show. No significant size advantage for the GAP but a large ammo cost and availablity dis-advantage for the GAP. I was impressed by the closeness in size of the XD9 and XD45.

I wanted the XD9 tactical (5") as strictly a range gun. I reload but have enough trouble finding time to keep my 1911s fed to be looking for another gun that needs reloads. I can buy 1000 9mm factory ammo for the cost of 1000 .45 bullets, primer and powder components and save a bunch of time by not having to reload.

I bought the 40 tactical v-10 about a year ago. They did not have the 45ACP yet and I did not want the 45GAP. I got the v-10 model because I've never had a ported gun and thought it would be "cool." If you buy a 40 you can also order a new barrel in 357sig and 9mm for about $150 each from EFK.

Unless you want extra muzzle blast and more cleaning chores go with the non-ported model. Don't get me wrong, I love my ported 40, but at an indoor range, the muzzle blast is annoying. Outside it is fine.

Perosnally, if I were to buy today it would be the 45ACP.
 
Have both the XD 9mm 5" and XD .40 4" service. Have fired 4000 rounds from the .40. The recoil with Blazer Brass 180 gr. is comparable to the 9mm. WalMart sells it at $7.94 a box which is affordable. I cannot get same accuracy from the 9mm. I did get 50 more points when I went from 115 gr to 127 gr, but in outdoor PPC, I used 147 gr. Still think the 40. is more fun to shoot.:D
 
I went with a sub-compact, but I bought a 9mm. Why? Because 9mm is CHEAP and it will get the job done assuming shot placement. I have a very low gun budget, but I love going to the range, so 9mm was the most economical choice.

This is true :D
I got a xd9 tac in OD a couple months back, I love it, it's easy to shoot and ammo is cheap, especially because my friend does his own reloading.
 
I got the XD-9 in SS with the 4" bbl. I couldn't be happier and I think it may be the best one. Whatever you get, get the stainless steel slide, the black coated slides will wear off much faster than most coating. SA did a bad job on the black coating but the SS is fine. I wouldn't get the compact model because it is too large and I wouldn't get the tactical size because it is only good for range work. The 4" seems to offer a TON of accuracy and that is what I am most happy about. It is a very accurate gun, more accurate than any Beretta, S&W, Ruger, CZ or Walther I have shot. It is in the class of SIG, Colt and Star in terms of accuracy.
