Anybody got a Model 58 S&W that they've shot some? I'm getting a bad case of the 'want ones' for a 58, and think I could get along just fine with one for most of my handgun chores.

If you fit the above category, take a minute and tell me how you like yours, which load (if any) does it shoot to the sights with, etc. Post a pic if you feel like it. The next question of course, is where's one for sale & how much?

Thanks to all, responses are greatly appreciated.

Yes.

I've shot mine (a 4") quite a bit, and I love it.

Remington 210 gr. JSPs are absolute thumpers. Very loud, very snappy recoil. I made the NRA range sit up and take notice when I unloaded a cylinder full of those last year.

I can't tell you exactly what my reload is, as I'm away from home, but it's a 215 LSW bullet and some Winchester 231 powder.

Not as snappy as the Remington loads, but still a handful.

Great gun; but the 57 is also.
Check GunsAmerica; they have had quit a few for sale this last month or so.
Silvertips are great in these guns and ProLoad has a real thumper.
Mostly I reload with 21ogr. XTPs.

Sorry, photo attachment is not working.

I will always yearn for the customized 58 that I could have bought for $250.00. It later turned up in a friend's hands. Twice a year, I ask him if he'll sell it to me for $500.00. So far, no good. :(

It's all L. Neil Smith's fault!

Gunsamerica has a fine example of a Model 58. They also have what appears to be a Model 57 with a ported M58 barrel screwed on.
One of my first guns was a Model 657 with 3" barrel. Most impressive. I wish I still had it.

Here is a bone stock M58

After I decided that I wanted a 41 magnum it took me two months to find this 657 Mountain gun. My quest for a 4" Model 57 will continue on until I find one.

Here is is with two fired and recovered 210gr Hornady XTPs.

I know where there might still be a model 58 about but if I recall correctly the seller wants in the $600 range for it. That's too rich for my blood as I'm not very interested in that model.

It took me quite a while to find a Model 57, but I did. Now I am looking for a .45 Colt MTN GUN.....then I will stop with the S&W for a while.

an ugly gun is like an ugly, but, sweet tempered woman. you love her for what she is, not how she looks.

if you feel ashamed to be seen with that ugly thing, i will take it and be glad.

I've always liked the .41 mag, since my Dad bought me a Ruger Blackhawk in that caliber in 1971. I still have that gun, and I picked up a very clean first model 57 with a 4-inch barrel for a little over $400 a few months ago. My brother has a clean Model 58, but his has the larger S&W stocks like the Model 57.

Hey Sarge!

Buy one! I had been haunting gun shows for years looking for one and happened upon a beautiful nickel plated one at a gentleman's table a few years ago. He was the original owner and trying to thin out his collection. After a little discussion I left with it for $300.00 and was stopped by three men before I left the isle who wanted to buy it. When I told one guy it wasn't for sale he asked if he could just hold it. I let him.

That's the magic of the model 58. :what:

I called Smith & Wesson with the serial number to find out how old it was. Lo and behold it was one of the original runs of the Model 58s from 1964 and she told me the nickel plated ones are very rare. The same year the .41 Magnum was introduced!

So being the guy I am I promptly shipped it to my gunsmith and had him smooth it up, radius the trigger, chamfer the cylinder mouthes, trim the hammer a bit, and Metalife the hammer and trigger to contrast nicely with the nickel plating.

Now I carry the gun whenever the weather is nice enough to cooperate. It's in my nightstand drawer as I write this.

As for loads, I've talked to several other Model 58 owners and several told me that the Winchester 175-grain Silvertip hits about one inch high, but centered at 25 yards while the newer Federal Premium hardcast 250-grain hunting load shots to the point of aim at 25 yards. I've read that bullets over 220-grains won't stabilize properly in a S&W .41 Magnum, but they seem to shoot fine in mine. While I have not tried the Federal 250-grain load in my M-58, the assertion about the Silvertip seems to be correct. Then I fired some Federal Classic 210-grain JHPs (1300 fps) and they seems to shoot dead on to the point of aim as well at 25 yards.

If you plan on going beyond 25 yards (e.g., hunting) I'd simply try the different loads and see what works best in the guy you buy. You might see more variance as you get further out. If you're staying within 25 yards, it has been my experience that once sighted in for your favorite load, the other .41 Magnum loads tend to be pretty darn close to the point of aim.

Don't forget the new Winchester Platinum 240-grain load (1250 fps) they are introducing this year. I haven't tried it, but it should be a great hunting load or deep penetration self defense load.

Bottom line, buy a .41 Magnum and enjoy. I own two Model 57s with four inch barrels, a M-58 with a four inch barrel, and two M-657s with three and six inch barrels respectively. Favorite loads are the Winchester 175-grain Silvertip and Federal Classic 210-grain JHP loads. Both are excellent at longer ranges and have manageable flash.

Thanks folks...

I'll hunt around here locally and hit a few shows, see what there is to be had. A much of a nuisance as they have made gun purchases, I can't hardly bring myself to buy I gun that I can't handle first; so internet auctions are more a source of entertainment for me than anything else. Take care-

New year, new .41 Magnum, I say!

My M58 hits center with Remington LSWC 210 grain loads. These are supposed to run at about 900 fps. My reloads with 215 grain bullets at about 1,000 fps shoot to about the same point of aim. Winchester Silvertips hit high, if I remember right.

Hmm, what's the value of a blue Model 58 in excellent condition but without the original box? The Standard Catalog of S&W (2d edition) suggests $325. A gun show regular that I know is offering to sell me his for $400 and he claims it's worth more. Is $400 a reasonable price or is it too high? :scrutiny:
