i have an m1 garand that i'm getting ready to sell, but i definitely need to try to determine the current value in some way other than farting around on gunbroker. any help from someone schooled in this particular niche would be greatly appreciated. here is some info:

no rust. no corrosion. stock is well used but has no serious digs and is solid structurally.....no cracks/chips.

serial numbers:

-barrel is SA D6535448 and that number is followed by 8 53 A202B

-trigger housing is D28290-7-SA

-trigger is 646008-3 SA

-receiver is 2243253 springfield armory, which is apparently circa 1944

-the piece that the en bloc pushes down on....either the follower assembly or bullet guide?? this serial number is D28287, and another piece in there is D28289.

again, any help in determining a ballpark value would be great.

also, i would rate the metal on the receiver and trigger/trigger housing to be very good. i would rate barrel metal to be good. weapon functions fine. thanks.

Sounds like a rebuilt mid-late WW2 M1 in decent condition. Probably not much collector interest, but could be a shooter. Most folks buying a shooter will be interested in the throat erosion and muzzle wear so they'll have an idea as to amount of life left in the barrel. I think the value as a shooter will be in those measurements.

I would take those measurements and check the CMP prices of similar condition rifles. Then simply add whatever you feel is fair for not having to jump though the hoops of purchasing through CMP.

thanks for the reply. bear with me....how does a layman simply and effectively take those measurements? i keep seeing pictures of bullet end of 30-06 rounds inserted into the muzzle.

I'm not sure how these would rate, but the second one from the left came to me as a Service grade from CMP and is an excellent shooter. The one on the far right measured right at a one. The 30-06 rounds are Danish surplus from CMP. It's my understanding that commercial 30-06 will give a different result due to the shape of the bullet. Use a surplus M2 round if possible.
