Who carries a small caliber?

Smaller than a 38 in what way?
diameter? If you mean 38 special it's really .357 (9mm) in diameter not .38
power? most rounds from 380 (9x17) and up ether match or beat it.

Personally I don't, but if I did, I would not have an issue carrying a 22mag snubbie, something along the lines of the S&W 351c 7 shot. Decent number of rounds, SD short barrel ammo quality is considerably improved in recent years, compact and recoil is almost non existent. Multiple shots on target is always a good thing.

I have at my disposal a number of firearms, but the one I find myself carrying is a Kel-Tec P32, loaded with Winchester Silver Tips. It is light and easy to carry. I am accurate enough with it for a eye shot at 15 feet. In my youth I felt anything smaller than a ,45 was a waste of time. Oh how attitudes change. Now I smile at the younger crowd carrying 6 inch Model 28s or trying to find a CC holster for a Judge. No offence, if that is what you carry, but I now believe in the old school that it's not what you carry but rather or not you put the bullet where it is suppose to be.:):):)

Half of my family carried .38 spl while on the job with the NYPD. A few still carry .38 snubs off duty or in retirement. The .38 killed many a bad guy in NYC.

When I get my WI CCL soon, I will carry a S&W 637 snub in .38spl half of the time. I have no worries as to it's effectiveness, especially loaded with today's bullets. I prefer Gold Dot Short Barrel rounds.

While i mostly cary my Glock 26 or my S&W 38 snub, I have carried my Beretta 950 in the .25 ACP. Don't laugh too much. I can shoot it fast and accurate, plus it's never jammed in the 300+ rounds out of it. I'm just irked that it costs more than a 9mm to shoot!

Got a Beretta 21A in 22LR that I have carried at times. My wife laid claim to it for awhile and now my daughter has it. It's a fun gun, reliable, and although not the best caliber for SD, it will work. Lot of folks discount the round ~ when I grew up in the rural South, just about every farmer had a .22 in their truck. They used those guns for just about everything.

One of my all time favorites is the Walther PP in .32 ACP. Over the last 30+ years I have owned five of the PP series pistols. I have had both .380 and .32 ACP in this gun. Hands down the .32 ACP functions better, and is more fun to shoot than the larger caliber in the Walther. It's light recoil provides for quick follow up shots, accuracy is tops, and the 9 shot (8+1) capability is pretty nice.

I've got a couple of .38s. For larger calibers a 44 Special Bisley, a 1911 45 ACP, and a Model 92 Winchester for distance.

If I knew for certain I was going to be in a fight, I'd choose my rifle. Otherwise, I am comfortable with the the smaller calibers. I want something that I will keep on me and with me instead of in my vehicle or at home.

I carry a .25 in an ankle holster when I drive because the 38 in the pocket is kinda hard to get to when your sitting.

My daily carry is a 5-shot NAA Black Widow in .22 Mag. This firearm is an ideal size - small enough to conceal easily yet just large enough to grip properly.

With a spare .22lr cylinder, I am able to practice regularly and cheaply. The new Gold Dot short barrel ammo works well for self defense.

Yes.....over the years I've carried everything from .22 Short on up.
I own dozens of carry pistols these days, but usually just have a basic Kel-Tec P32 on me. At most now, I'll carry a 9x19.
I no longer feel the need for 'five fighting Fairborns, four-tens in Judges, three spare mags, two tasers tasing, and a partridge sighted Fo-Tay'.
But that's just me........... :D
.

Least powerful gun I carry is a .380, my Sig P238. I prefer to carry at least a 9mm, but there are days when a tiny pocket gun is all I can get away with.

I carry an LCP just a bit more than my Kahr PM9.
I recently bought a Kel-Tec P32 on a whim and liked shooting it so much I will probably put it on the carry line as soon as I figure out what holster to buy for it.
No sweat.

When I'm at work, all I carry is my NAA .22 mag, I wouldn't be able to conceal anything else effectively. ( I probably could, but I'm not going to risk my job when I can at least have something.)

Personally you will want to get a pocket sized 380 in addition to what ever you may carry attached to your belt. I think you will find it to be with you almost all the time despite the dress, with my KelTec the only time I am unarmed is in nonpermissive areas.
I don't intend to say that it should be all you carry but when you find yourself saying you don't want to were that sirt or pants (dressing around a gun) then you can happily slide that 380 into your pocket.

My wife likes an old S&W New Departure breaktop in .32. Better that than a sharp stick especially against dogs or coyotes up here.

My personal minimum caliber for primary carry is .38 spl +P, in the form of a S&W 642, during hot weather. During the seasons where I can comfortably wear a cover garment, it is one of my auto pistols that begin with the number "4".

Backup carry, is the aforementioned .38 spl during cooler weather and at work. I do own a NAA Mini Revolver, with cylinders for .22 lr and .22 magnum. I sometimes carry that with the magnum cylinder, when I am knocking around the neighborhood, riding my bicycle, mowing the lawn, etc. What a neighbor calls my "Get the f--k off of me gun." I live in a gated community with restricted access (no, not a prison) but there is no place that is safe.

That's what works for me. Your mileage may vary.
