Just a little fact, the Romans gave their soldiers, both active and retired, THE best medical care in the Empire. The best hospitals were military hospitals. Soldiers who survived their military careers were generally, along with the very wealthy, the healthiest and longest-lived citizens.

I'll also bet that your refering to a time that was post Republic. A time when the choice of next Emporer had more to do with who the military supported.... If the military is the bread and butter of your power base then guess who's bread is going to get buttered... err yeah that sounds right in my head. Basically the military gets the best of everything in Emperial Rome (post Republic) cause they had major influence.

So careful with what comparisons you want to make....
but otherwise I support any medical and life needs for vets to the point where they are self destructive, there is no helping people like that.

You’ve been scammed. Most Vietnam vets came back well adjusted. A lot of un-adjusted ones don’t even have a combat record. Read for a good review. http://www.schlatter.org/Dad/stolen_valor.htm
If I had a nickel for every seal I met from who was in Vietnam I would be rich. Just go to the opening of the moving wall. I volunteered at one in Wisconsin and showed up with a shirt and tie (and well groomed)and a lot of so-called vets had long hair, dirty BDU’s and looked like street people. I was talking to one during a break in the support tent and found out that he was never there.

Hears another one . I had a friend tell me he had PTSD and I asked him why. He said he was stationed in Germany and was suffering from survivor’s guilt because he never went to Viet Nam. You Knows how he know that? A VA Shrink told him!!!!!
Sometimes the only thing that separates the patients from the caregivers is the key they fondle for security…

This world is full of sick people and most of them are not Viet Nam vets. That’s crap that the Kerry types would like to feed you.

BTW This is a sore point for me.

And another thing. Not everyone fell for the lefts crap... A women came up to be and asked me if I served in Viet Nam at the moving wall and I said I did and she hugged me. I told her my sacrifice was nothing and the real Heroes were on the wall. And to spend some time with them...

Maybe every single one that has come knocking on the door of or calling my church, asking for money? It gets humorous when they forget which churches they have hit up, so they show up a year later with the same story. You remember them, but they don't remember you. :D

There have been news stories around here of people who have followed these people who stand at highway exits; at the end of the day they go hop in their new Cadillac in the commuter lot. Remember; they don't pay taxes on the cash they pull in.

In the SF area, we do have some legitimately unfortunate people, who deserve our help, so I try to listen and point them towards help. Most, however, can't get past a couple of questions before their story falls apart.

There's one in particular who constantly forgets who he's hit up, or what story he's used. Yes, he's been a vet (but can't remember his unit because of a head wound), he's also been a police cadet (got drunk, needs to get home before he gets in trouble), a businessman who lost his wallet (he even had a briefcase for that one). I'm tempted to give him money, just because he's such a good actor.

The rest get food vouchers, directions to the nearest church helping the homeless, and/or the nearest medical clinic.

Who do I direct my anger to
Him

Speaking as a Veteran, Son and Nephew of WWII Veterans, Brother to three Vietnam Veterans, there is no excuse. Everyone in my family (to include my USAF, Retired Father and Brother in-law) did our service and became productive members of society. None have ever had to stick our hand out and beg.

There are too many programs for vets (available for the asking) to help any veteran who has fallen on hard times, or has other issues. In addition to the numerous VA programs, I've volunteered my time with the DuPage County Veterans Asistance Commission, which provides loans/grants to pay bills for veterans that have lost their jobs or otherwise fallen on hard times. Every American Legion or VFW post has a Service Officer whose job is to help veterans get the help/benefits they've earned.

I won't set foot in a VA hospital. I served without getting hurt, therefore my government owes me nothing. Now for those guys that were hurt, injured, and especailly those with the purple heart medal, the government owes a debt that can never be re-paid.

I have a special loathing for fakes and posers.
