Who doesn't have a chronograph?

I was considering buying a chrono, and asked myself "Do I need this or just want this." The answer was that I wanted it but I have been handloading for a long time and never really needed one. So you know what? I bought a Labradar and think it was a great purchase for what I do. Being an accountant, I'm a numbers guy and I find it vastly interesting to look at the numbers and to analyze what they're telling me. I find it particularly helpful if I make a change to a load, like a different primer or different charge weight. Also what impact does weather have on my loads? I live in MN and we have some pretty big temp changes throughout the year. I have found that temp can have a big impact on performance and I found that info mainly from what my chrono was telling me.

So, needed? No. But I enjoy having and use one and believe it has made me a better handloader.

I have been thinking about getting one , since learning about them.. a few months after the reloading started. Has not even been a year yet of doing it. However, right before early deer season , muzzleloader started I took my new flintlock deerstalker 54 cal to the range to learn how to shoot it. Sight it in and just get familiar with , Tuesday ,season started Saturday . Anyway I met a gentleman there, John, at the rifle range( a min drive down the driveway from the pistol range at the club) 357 sig shooting it thru his chronograph. Competition I believe was the make. I left him alone till he was done with his set. Then inquired. Turned out he retired from where i work , I know 3 of his 4 children and we knew a lot of the same people. He told me he had been shooting competition for years , with his boys. Reloading 30+ years, etc. Bought one 10 years ago and wondered why he took so long to do it. Said it helped with load development. And safety overall. Anything can fail he said, even after you just checked that scale ,calibrate it ... anything can happen he said. Told me about a guy Kenny who worked there as well, (he sponsored me joining the club when I moved & started working there) Kenny was ....we will say different but he is a nice guy. He was trying out new loads.. well John said he must have ran it over with trickler... said Kenny always loaded em hot! Told his boys get back when he shoots. They all did that day.. Kennys gun blew up into hundreds of pieces he said. Very Lucky! his hands has some burns was it. Safety glasses were on. I stayed , kept shooting, John left after we talked a bit. Neil , a gentleman a see at the range often. He showed not too long after. Set his up Caldwell. 222 Remington loads he was working on. Groups looked damn good. Said would not believe just how different the numbers vary from the data books. And he is correct, like i have seen posted on here already. Same barrel length ,chamber etc.. I do plan on getting one .. just which is the debate.. would like one for all 3 shotgun , pistol , rifle

If you follow published load data to the T. You don’t need a chrono, they already chono-ed for ya
Wow! You are the first person I have ever encountered that hunts with a universal receiver with individual barrels identical with what the published data used. I assume you also hunt in the same temperature that the published data was collected in?

once you zero it, and pop a few water jugs, should be good

I tried hunting a few times on the deer lease, got bored, put the guns up, bond fire and beer with the guys

An interesting thread. Idly. Have a chrono but want one. Mostly because I work with cast bullets of which there is no specific data. It'll help me stay within safe pressures for unpublished components. I'm going to get a cheaper one, that don't require me to have a computer.
