Lead is softer than jacketed bullets...it seals the bore quicker. That may cause the pressure to peak a tad sooner, but I believe it equals out with the lead being softer.

Ridgerunner665, thanks very much ... I really appreciate the help.

:)

I agree with Ridgerunner665, I believe that lead bullets (even hard cast) have lower pressure than the typical jacketed projectile.

BTW, that is a nice looking cartridge carrier, 1858 (I need to have one made for the 1885).

I just noticed something, that 405 bullet...is it a gas check bullet?

No, it's not a gc bullet. What's the maximum velocity for a non gas checked lead bullet? Is 1,750 fps acceptable?

Thanks

:)

Did you get any leading in your barrel?

IMO...GC's just make things simpler.

I just checked both barrels and they look ok ... not completely lead free but nothing to worry about ... not yet anyway. As we discussed via PM, I'm going to reduce the loads and will clean the barrels before the next range trip.

I bought 1,000 of the Remington 405gr bullets to "make things simpler" but hadn't realized that they won't hold together on tough game at 1,800 fps velocities. I bought the OT Laser-Cast bullets assuming that they would hold together without leading ... but we'll see. As many have said, you don't need to push a 405gr bullet particulary fast for it to be effective ... sometimes less is more ... or so I'm told. :)

Just one, my Shiloh Sharps Hartford.

Thats true...but some like it hot, LOL.

I'm one of them...

Me too!! There's probably a 12 step program for us somewhere, but in the meantime ...

Count me in...I like to push those wee little 300gr. HPs to about 2450fps just for fun, and I really want to be able to push the 450s & 465s nearly that fast (which will require a different chambering).

"... .454" bullets meant for the 45 Colt almost as well."

45 Colt has been the same as 45 ACP, .451-.452, for quite a long time. Not really interchangeable with the 45-70.

Interchangeable? No. The 45/70 bore is .457 while the original 45 Colt was bored .454 and in recent years they make it .452" so using the 45/70 bullet in the 45 Colt would be bad as they would be too heavy )350 grains is the lightest .457 bullet I have seen) and oversized which can raise pressures. But using the smaller 45 Colt bullet in the 45/70 only means accuracy will be less than top notch due to the slightly undersized bullet.

As I stated, I use the .454" slugs in plinking loads for my 45/70s and they work fairly well. I always use .454 bullets in all my 45 Colt revolvers, even the newer ones bored .452. They shoot better.
