I have. Once. I shot it once because I didn't want to shoot it twice.
Timeline...about 1982. O/U Derringer...can't recall whose. Remington 240-grain JHP.
Stand in front of a sturdy workbench. Raise your open hand high above your head. With all your strength, slam your palm onto the workbench. There...That's about right.

Isn't that the gun you're supposed to file a sharp hook shape into the front sight so you can entangle the gun by twisting it in the BG's clothes, which would reduce the recoil? And they called it a "Riverboat Special?"
I'm serious --I seem to recall a buddy of mine from Louisiana telling me about that once (ca 1965.)
Somebody straighten me out if I'm wrong.

Not the 44 but the 45ACP with +P loads.
Not all that bad for a few shots but not something I'd want to do a lot.
Mine is a Bond Arms. In order to shoot it a lot and keep in practice I loaded about a thousand light loads for it.
They are interesting and fun to shoot, if the gun isn't busting your hand too bad.
And the Bond is accurate with a little practice. With just two shots you want to make sure they count.

It would be a BUG to one of my other primary, not intended for recreation just as the NAA is not recreational.
I have been looking at Bond as one can change barrels in an instant and they produce several models and barrel lengths in most major calibers.
I would prefer the 3.5" Snake Charmer in 45/410 (with a spare .44 barrel) with the trigger guard and the oversized grip, which together should tame the recoil according to the website. They also recommend firing lower chamber first for faster recovery.
Yes, it would be my belly gun, for threats that are within knife range and in instances when inappropriate to have my S&W or Charter Arms. It would also act as BUG.
Anyone that still has a Derringer and finds it uncomfortable should perhaps try changing to oversize grips.

My Dad had one in .357 mag. He shot it once, broke the blood vessels in his hand, sold it. 
Had a co-worker that bouhgt one of the "American Derringer" brand in .357Mag, 1991/92 or so. Last time I asked, he still had 49 of the box of 50 Rem 158-Gr SJHP ammo he bought with it.

I used to have an American Derringer over/under in 45 acp, and it wasn't bad at all to shoot, so I'd expect a .44 special would be OK. No way I'd even try a .44 magnum.

Probably hurt even more- he'd quit hurting pretty soon. It's gonna take a few days for that red mark on your hand to go away.

Have one in .357 bottom .410 top, it is a real handful to shoot, for a BUG I like my American arms 5 shot .22 mag better, more accurate, more rounds.

I have not fired the .44, but I have fired the 45LC/.410 with the extended wood finger style grip. 45LC is kinda fun for a few rounds. I find the .410 unpleasant but can't help but believe it's a great belly gun round with 000 buck.

I have only fired my deringer type pistol in 9mm. I fired it a few times and I do not think i will be taking it out again soon. Maybe if I had one in say, 22 mag.

Another friend told me the first time he fired one (in .22 Mag?), he used his middle finger for the trigger and placed his index finger along the barrel for "pointability." Fingernail hung over the muzzle and the (what, 6000 psi?) blast almost took his fingernail off.
Can you imagine the poor guys who have to test-fire them at the factories?
Anyhow, I figure any gun which is that close to the weight of the projectile is going to be just about as dangerous as the projectile, m1V1 = m2v2 and all that rot.

Nope. Don't want to. The "hearsay" evidence I've heard, and as above, is enough for me, the "philosophy" of a teeny powerful gun notwithstanding.
Don't want to try holding a cherry bomb in my hand, either, again based on pure hearsay evidence.

Maybe with .44 Specials in it, which are quite mild recoiling.
Closest I've tried was a POS one in .38 Spl.
Friends and I would load it with +P's as a joke.
It belonged to a friend who eventually gave it away.
It's not that it kicked that hard, it's just that it was such a sharp
slap that it could never be considered pleasant.
Besides, apart from curiosity factor, why would one carry a two-shot

I already carry the NAA magnum as either BUG or BUG4BUG (which I have been calling a LaR (Last Resort, meaning that there is a second BUG).
Problem is that I am switching jobs that is putting me on the road making deliveries of heavy items and I would like something that is flat and powerful, something that I can stow anywhere on my body until I find the right comfort zone that will not interfere with the physical aspect of the job, I don't want anyone to know that I carry (fanny pack is a dead giveaway, so is outside shirt). My preference is to not buy anything that is magazine fed, and for simplicity been trying to stay with one caliber (.44)
If I can't find a practical solution like some type of customized holster for the Charter, then my alternative is another CCW (Which is why I have posted my Webley for sale, as it is just a safe queen).

I have carried this gun for a while now and have been quite pleased with the way it shoots and the accuracy. Also that big slow .45 in 220 gr HP has a bunch of stopping power out to about 25 feet. The 000 makes about a 1.5' spread pattern at about 15 feet with less than desirable accuarcy so is really only good for 10 feet or less. #6 birdshot makes about a six foot spread pattern at 15 feet so it is decent for snakes. I took a 3' diamond back with it last fall that had creeped up on to the porch.
Guess I should also mention that I am a 'Texas Sized' person and weight lift heavy a couple of times a week so shooting guns that bothers a lot of people does not bother me. As far as carry options go there are plenty with this gun that work well with a physically active person.

Not really on topic here but I have seen pics of Remington over and under derringers that have sort of a hook shape to the front sight.
I thought that was just how they were made since I have only seen a couple and never actually handled one.
Maybe that was a somewhat common mod.

Never shot one but I would think that if you are going to do it, go .410.
If you go smaller than that you might as well just go with a P-32 and have a more controllable gun that is faster to reload.
